Worth-seeing exhibitions at the 2014 edition of Design Days Paris



B'bath

The gallery B'Bath presents Bath in Motion for D'DAYS in Paris, a group exhibition fully dedicated to bath room design, that puts the design work of internationally reputed artists on display, such as Chantal Pillard, Thierry Mutin, Agape, Dornbracht, Satyendra Pakhalé for Tubes, Wall&decò and Lithos Design. Furthermore, B'Bath invited the Colorfield Gallery to exhibit the kinetic works of the artist Fred Benoit. In this sense, Bath in Motion expresses B'Bath aim to turn each bathroom into a timeless design place, through which designers express their very own take on the art of well-being, meditation and intimacy.

Boffi-Bains & Boffi-Paris

Boffi kills two birds with one stone: for D'DAYS in Paris, both Boffi Bains and Boffi Paris invited artists to express their take on movement––this year's festival theme. In this context Boffi Bains presents Floating Worlds, an exhibition by scenographer Cédric Martineaud, who exhibits slow motion videos which depict the textile designs of artist Ysabel de Maisonneuve. According to an official statement, the exhibition is meant to be an immersive experience, in which textile and water mingle and merge. On the other hand, Boffi Paris, in collaboration with Chef Alexandre Gauthier and culinary designer Marc Bretillot presents Taken By the F(l)ood, a so-called "quest for a maritime meal in its purest form".

CIAV Meisenthal & Bernard Chauveau

For the 2014 edition of D'DAYS, the International Glass Art Centre of Meisenthal and the publisher Bernard Chauveau put on display an exhibition entitled Jeanne & Cie, which features works of the artist Régis Mayot, who did a special commission for the Centre back in 2011. Mayot's exhibited pieces are inspired by glassblowing moulds, and reveal the aesthetics of the tools, rather than their functional purpose.

Galeries Lafayette

In partnership with Villa Noailles, the Galeries Lafayette invited the object designer and artist Julie Richoz, winner of Hyère's 2013 Design Parade, to take over the shop windows of Lafayette Maison Haussmann with her installation Arrêt sur Objet, in order to reaffirm the store's role in presenting art and design to the public. According to an official statement, Julie Richoz aims to interpret D'DAYS current guiding thread, movement, as a synonym for rhythm and vibration.

Tai Ping

For the 2014 edition of D'DAYS, the luxury custom carpet company teamed up with the Paris-based Venezuelan artist Elias Crespin, who showcases Tai Ping rugs, by creating an interactive design experience, crafted from wire and nylon threads. His various structures, shapes and lines consequently enable an ever-changing combination of styles.

Gallery S. Bensimon

For D'DAYS 2014, the Gallery Serge Bensimon has given Swedish designer Hilda Hellström carte blanche to work on an original design based on the analogy between the potter's clay and our planet Earth, both in motion. Hellström's snapshots therefore reveal intriguing ceramic patterns of undulating motives that play with our perception of craftsmanship.

Lausanne Jardins 2014 / ECAL

The ECAL (University of Art and Design Lausanne) has challenged its BA students from the Industrial Design course to create an outdoor installation that makes a nod to nature and sustainability. In this context, the students teamed up in a workshop in order to design Mobile Topiary, creations inspired by classic topiaries. The participating students, consisting of Clarisse Mordret, Arthur Cotteaux and Paul Tubiana, created box plants on wheels, that are striking for their geometric shapes, which recall traditional French gardens.

Le Lieu du Design

For the first time, Le Lieu du Design teamed up with ALSTOM, the RATP Group and the STIF, in order to analyze the visual impact of tramways on the urban landscape. For this purpose, an exhibition was set up on time for D'DAYS 2014, highlighting French tramway designs via several models from the past thirty years. This so-called manifest exhibition is curated by Yo Kaminagai of the RATP, and aims to analyze the design heritage of French tramways, while questioning their visual identity.

YaMaKaDo

For its latest exhibition during D'DAYS, YaMaKaDo, the brainchild of Agnès and Hiroyuki Yamakado, collaborated with a creative trinity of artists, consisting of Antoine Phelouzat, Itamar Burstein (design and scenography) and Pierric de Paris. In this context, the trio analyzed the essence of the production process, by taking into account the roles played by the client, the designer and the manufacturer.

Silvera Kleber & Silvera Poliform

Silvera Kléber teamed up with scenographer Alix Libeau in order to showcase iconic pieces by the reputed French designer Pierre Paulin, that were commissioned by the Dutch furnishing label Artifort. Libeau took great care in staging the selected pieces in a vivid and audacious way, by creating an exhibition path of forms in motion, with fluctuating lines and invigorating effects that embrace Paulin's furnishings for Artifort. On the other hand, Silvera Poliform presents a scenery by architectural design expert Riccardo Blumer and his students of the ICU, which features an installation of large wooden design pieces in a game of perpetual motion.

La Manufacture Cogolin

Addressing the importance of the manufacturing process, La Manufacture Cogolin teamed up with designer Florent Albinet and textile designer Luce Couillet and commissioned them to interpret the intricate manufacturing process of a Cogolin rug in their very own artistic way. In this context, the duo's aim is to reveal the excitement behind a design creation, to support "a hybrid machine, a weaving beast". For this purpose, both designers worked on mechanical features that breath life and movement into their design compositions.

CIRVA

As part of his residency at CIRVA (International Research Center for Glass and Plastic Arts) in Marseille, David Dubois exhibits Mobile for D'DAYS, where he experiments with variations on a glass object. His current designer productions for the Center are inspired by his ongoing research based on his 2012 Makrame / electric system project, which consists of suspended braids of electrical wire sheaths. According to an official statement, David Dubois' main aim in his current designs is to "break the monotony of the arrangement of an inhabited volume".
