This 9th edition will examine the importance of forms and the meaning they give to functions,
usages or the quality of life. What values underlie the aesthetics? For what intentions, for what
purposes? What do the forms produced say about the way of life, the usages and practices of a
society? What are they whispering about the state of the world?

The Biennial’s general curators, Benjamin Loyauté and Elsa Francès, wanted to give this 9th edition a resolutely international dimension with a selection of some of the biggest names in design, such as: Giovanna Massoni and Dieter Van Den Storm, Bart Hess and Alexandra Jaffré, David-Olivier Lartigaud and Samuel Vermeil, Stéphane Villard and Gaëlle Gabillet, Oscar Lhermitte, Eric Petrotto, Kim Colin and Sam Hecht, Ionna Vautrin, Yuri Suzuki, Studio Glithero, Florence Ostende, Dennis Parren and Sam Baron.

The general call for proposals drew almost 500 responses.

Korea, the guest of honour thanks to the UNESCO Cities of Design network, will be presenting its young talents under the curatorship of Kyung Ran Choi.

Forward-looking, cultural, innovative, high tech, international, this 9th edition has some real
surprises in store thanks to a large number of special productions that will be unveiled for the
first time during the Biennial. The «IN» Biennial will be taking place at different
emblematic venues:

- In Saint-Étienne: Cité du Design - La Manufacture, Bourse du Travail, La Plateforme –
Office de Tourisme, Amicale Laïque Chapelon, Musée de la Mine, Musée d’Art Moderne de
Saint-Étienne Métropole, Musée d’Art et d’Industrie.

- In Firminy, Le Corbusier site – Saint-Pierre church,

- In Lyon, at Le Plateau at the Hôtel de la Région Rhône-Alpes.

As for «LE OFF», it will be offering some thirty other exhibitions across the Metropolitan district.
