In order to uphold its commitment to responsible fashion, [red]Stella McCartney[/red] is looking for ways to cut down on wastage and reduce the impact that the production of its clothes, accessories, and beauty line have on the environment. That’s why today, the brand has announced that it will cease to use virgin cashmere anywhere in its line.

Virgin cashmere is obtained from the wool of cashmere goats, typically raised in the grasslands of Mongolia. As a fiber, it is finer and softer and is approximately three times more insulating than that of sheep’s wool. This makes it an invaluable factor in top quality coats and luxury knits, but the issue in using it, however, is that it takes four goats to generate the same amount of yarn as one sheep.

Add to that the negative effect that the goats grazing is having on Mongolian grasslands and cashmere impacts the environment 100 times more than sheep’s wool.

So the brand has started working in partnership with the Sustainable Fibre Alliance and Wildlife Conservation Society to support grassland protection in Mongolia and is replacing virgin yarn with a type of regenerated cashmere that's called [red]Re.Verso[/red].

Re.Verso is made in Italy and impacts the environment 92% less than virgin cashmere. So far, it’s the best practice for eco-responsible cashmere use. Stella McCartney is one of the first major fashion houses to use this new method.
