This year, the LVMH Prize For Young Fashion Designers, which under the patronage of LVMH since 2013 has contributed to supporting young designers, held virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 20 selected semi-finalists showcased their collections via a virtual showroom from April 6 to 11 at the LVMHprize.com website and for the first time the public voted on its favorite candidate, together with a committee of experts. The panel of experts included this year: model Bella Hadid, editor-in-chief Samira Nasr of Harper’s Bazaar US, actress Léa Seydoux, fashion director Aleksandra Woroniecka of Vogue Paris and editor-in-chief Margaret Zhang of Vogue China. Also tennis champion Naomi Osaka joined the jury as the new ambassador of the LVMH Prize.

I am very grateful to all the candidates from more than 110 countries for taking part in this year’s competition,” said Delphine Arnault, founder of the LVMH Prize and executive vice president of Louis Vuitton. “All the semi-finalists have incorporated a responsible stance in their creative vision: use of innovative or traditional materials, upcycling, recycled fibres, artisanal and local approaches. These initiatives echo the shift in the fashion and luxury industries.

Among the semi-finalists, seven do womenswear, five menswear, and two do both womenswear and menswear. Six of them design genderless collections. This edition also saw the return of knitwear, body-conscious garments and the celebration of color among certain designers,” explained Arnault.

The 20 semi-finalists come from China, France, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Nigeria, South Africa, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States, Albania and Colombia, representing a great diversity of cultures and talents.

The winner will receive a 300,000 euro prize and a year of mentorship from designers and experts within LVMH; the winner of the Karl Lagerfeld special prize will receive a 150,000-euro sum and a year of mentorship.
