The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, the largest institution in the United States devoted to the arts, sciences, and artists of moviemaking, opens its doors to the public today, September 30, 2021. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano, the museum is simultaneously immersive, experimental, educational, and entertaining. More than a museum, this dynamic film center offers unparalleled experiences and insights into movies and moviemaking. The seven-story, 300,000-square-foot academy museum is located in the now renamed Saban Building, formerly known as the May Company building built in 1939, at the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles. The Saban Building features seven floors, including exhibition spaces, the 288-seat Ted Mann Theater, the Shirley Temple Education Studio, special event spaces, conservation areas, Fanny's restaurant and café developed by restaurateurs Bill Chait and Carl Schuster and conceptualized by architect Osvaldo Maiozzi (Raphael Francois is the executive chef, while Julian Cox is the bar’s mixologist), and a store. The new spherical addition is connected to the Saban Building via glass bridges and features the state-of-the-art 1,000-seat David Geffen Theater and the rooftop Dolby Family Terrace with its sweeping views of the Hollywood Hills.

The opening exhibitions include stories of cinema on the impact of moviemaking, past and present; the temporary exhibition Hayao Miyazaki, an unprecedented retrospective of the work of the acclaimed filmmaker and studio ghibli, the first of its kind in North America. The other exhibition being part of the opening are The path to cinema: highlights from Richard Balzer collection; Backdrop: an invisible art; and The oscars® experiences.
