What is a Cruise Collection?
Cruise, resort or holiday collections are special collections presented between Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter ready-to-wear seasons. Initially, designers created these collections for global wealthy consumers who consistently travelled and needed a wardrobe for different temperatures to their own. Today, many fashion houses launch into the market cruise collections as an opportunity to show new essential mid-seasons pieces dedicated to their clients who travel or live in warm climate all year. Now, Pre-Collections are playing an increasingly important role in the business of fashion.

Cruise Collections 2023

Chanel
Inspired by the cosmopolitan beach lifestyle of Monte-Carlo and Chanel's history along the Côte d’Azur, the collection reveals sophisticated silhouettes where beachside sportswear echoes a modern glamour. Chanel's history is punctuated by inspirational places that have contributed to shaping its style, establishing its codes and enhancing its creativity. Among these emblematic sources of inspiration, Monte-Carlo holds a special place. Its bonds with Chanel began in the 1910s, when Gabrielle Chanel discovered the Principality of Monaco and its surrounding region, and were strengthened by Karl Lagerfeld from the 1980s onwards. Today, through the Chanel Cruise 2022/23 collection, Virginie Viard is reviving the Riviera spirit of freedom and sophistication that perfectly reflects the idea of a fashion anchored in modernity.
From Paris to the Riviera, Chanel heads to Monte-Carlo for the Cruise 2022/23 collection by Virginie Viard on May 5. Directed by Sofia and Roman Coppola, the cinematic trailer reveals a pop mosaic of Monegasque icons from its favourite pastimes to its princesses, featuring Vivienne Rohner, Blesnya Minher, HyunJi Shin, Mariam de Vinzelle and Lyna Khoudri.

Louis Vuitton
Continuing his tradition of staging his Cruise shows in some of the world’s most remarkable architectural structures, Nicolas Ghesquière chose the Salk Institute in California to present his Louis Vuitton collection unveiled on May 12. Designed to resonate with the striking Brutalist setting of this architectural masterpiece, the collection invites the sun as guest of honor, playing an active part in the evolution of this wardrobe where changes in temperature set a stylistic tempo. "I wanted the clothes to be like reflections, a point of contact between light and people," said Nicolas Ghesquière

Zimmermann
Entitled High Tide, Zimmermann Cruise Collection 2023 explores nautical theme and was inspired by the images from the 50’s and 60’s of women on sailing holiday.
“For this Resort season we’ve dived into all things nautical and embraced the romance of sailing. I loved looking at all these gorgeous images from the 50’s and 60’s of women on idyllic sailing holidays and tried to capture a sense of the simple elegance and holiday glow that came from our references, there’s hints of nostalgia through the collection but with a fresh and fun take," said Creative Director, Nicky Zimmermann about the collection. "We worked with our artists to create jaunty sailboat prints, placement world maps and classic 50’s ikat florals. The mix of both liquid and sharp papery fabrics creates movement in our silhouettes, with some of the key looks opening up, almost like you’re walking through a breeze. Funnily enough I grew up sailing on a small boat with my Dad on weekends and holidays in Botany Bay in Sydney, which wasn’t particularly glamourous, and certainly not that relaxing! I think I prefer our take on a sunny holiday on the sea!”
