Louis Vuitton continues to emphasize the connection between craftsmanship and visual arts.
For the fifth edition of Artycapucines, the initiative born in 2019 which celebrates the Capucines bag, the luxury French maison collaborates with five contemporary artists, Billie Zangewa, Ewa Juszkiewicz, Liza Tou, Tursic & Mille, and Ziping Wang.
Launched in 2019, the Artycapucines project has involved, till now, 29 artists combining their creativity with the artisanal craftsmanship that characterizes each handbag.
The bag designed by Billie Zangewa, who hails from Malawi and is based in South Africa, is the translation of his masterpiece The Swimming Lesson (2020), featuring her son Mika, recreated through combination of trompe-l'oeil printing, embroidery and intentionally visible hand-stitching.
Known for her surrealist works in the field of painting and sculpture, Polish painter Ewa Juszkiewicz choses to transfer her 2021 creation Ginger Locks for the Louis Vuitton project by using a high-definition print and a string of golden pearls.
American artist Liza Lou, famed for her use of beads in sculptures such as Kitchen (1995) and intimate artworks, was inspired by this technique for her Capucine bag. Her piece is characterized by textural beadwork realized through embossing in delicate pastel colours, to be then wrapped around the bag as a second skin.
The reinterpretation of the Capucines bag by Franco-Serbian artistic duo Tursic and Mille, recognized internationally for their pictorial works, is a reconceptualization of the idea of image overload. The bag takes the form of a floral that frames a newly pigmented and embroidered rendition of the "Tenderness" 2021 work.
Finally, there is the smallest Artycapucines bag presented by Chinese artist Ziping Wang. A piece realized with leather patchwork and marquetry in bright hues and candy-like motifs, which is a powerful commentary on our visually saturated, self-reflective world.
The exclusive new versions of the bag, which takes its name from the first Louis Vuitton store opened in Paris, on Rue Neuve-des-Capucines in 1854, will be available in limited editions of 200 per bag. The project confirms the commitment of Louis Vuitton to art world.
