Gabriele Dal Dosso, born on the southwestern shore of lake Verbano in 1978, applies his geometric art to the practice of meditation, in a plastic exploration oriented towards transforming a philosophical idea into a tangible philosophical object. At the origin of his reflection, the artist is inspired by the Möbius strip, an object invented in mid XIX century by German mathematician August Ferdinand Möbius. See > Möbius strip
Gabriele Dal Dosso's CUBO DI GABO is an original evolution of the Möbius strip. The Möbius strip gave birth to a new branch in topology, that of non-orientable surfaces. What Gabriele Dal Dosso did is constructing a Möbius ring with a peculiar ratio and dissected in such a way allowing it to become a cube.
In CUBO DI GABO, the dichotomies inside/outside, open/closed, finite/infinite, full/empty collapse, losing their known connotations and boundaries. CUBO DI GABO is a geometric alchemy, a particular case of the long-sought squaring of the circle, projecting those who manipulate the object into a different dimension, allowing the exploration of new insights of thought otherwise inaccessible.
These cubes Gabriele Dal Dosso developed into artworks using different materials such as Carrara marble, wood, neon tubes, bronze and and cutting edge techniques such as metal and stone 3D printing and laser engraving. He also explored different fields such as furniture, street forniture and light design, and he’s got more in store.
- When was GABO'S CUBE born, and how did you come to this discovery?
GDD - I was still a young kid with an early passion for origami when I discovered and got under the spell of the Möbius ring. Later, during my military service, I read a book in which I found the definition of a Möbius cube, and that totally got my attention, since as far as I knew A.F. Möbius never developed a cube out of his ring and nobody else did. So I decided to make it.
- Do you think this discovery can somehow influence the reality around us?
GDD - Yes ! Provided you understand the principle of the Möbius strip, by manipulating a Gabo's Cube, you change your perception of yourself and your environment, like when you meditate and merge with the world.
- What are your projects and ambitions for your Cube?
GDD - I would like to see a mathematical translation of my work, which is visual and manual in essence, even if I probably wouldn't be able to read it (but I could learn). I believe it can provide a sort of geometric score that could serve as a framework for practical applications of various kinds, on different scales and in different fields.
