Seventy years have passed since the Compasso D’Oro first appeared, established in 1954 from an idea by Gio Ponti. Seventy years of work have made it a point of reference for a sector that in terms of cultural and economic values today represents one of the most significant.

This year’s edition, the 28th, aims to enhance the idea of quality design that has always distinguished the Compasso d’Oro. This concept of quality has changed over the decades as it has mirrored the evolution of culture and society, yet it still remains the point of reference for the award. The constant concept that has remained over the years is that the awards should not simply be given to the most popular or most beautiful objects, but to those that best represent the idea of Made in Italy design. The Compasso d’Oro is thus an instrument for measuring this special quality, which emerges from the convergence of a number of exceptional characteristics, whether they be social, aesthetic, industrial, or economic. It is a carefully considered selection process which over seventy years of history has awarded just over 370 Compasso d’Oro, a fact that in itself is testimony to the prestige that the award represents worldwide.

As always, the 2024 awards were presented at the ADI Design Museum in the presence of Attilio Fontana, president of the Lombardy Region, and Giuseppe Sala, mayor of Milan, together with ADI president Luciano Galimberti and Umberto Cabini, president of the Fondazione ADI Collezione Compasso d'Oro. This year's awards were assigned among 20 products, and more, as the Compasso d'Oro lifetime achievement awards were given to 9 Italians and two international creatives. In addition to the prizes, 39 honorable mentions, the three Targhe Giovani, and the 11 Compassi d'Oro for Lifetime Achievement were also awarded. Special Targhe were given to remember three figures recently deceased, who stood out for their great contribution to the culture of design, Manlio Armellini, Gaetano Pesce, and Italo Rota.

The jury was composed of industry experts including Maria Cristina Didero, author and independent curator; Luciano Galimberti, designer and ADI president; Francisco Gómez Paz, designer; Renata Cristina Mazzantini, director of the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome; and Toshiyuki Kita, designer and ambassador of the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka.

All the winning products are on display at the ADI Design Museum until September 16, 2024, with exhibition design by Perla Gianni Falvo and Carlo Malerba.
