After 11 years, Jonathan Anderson is exiting Loewe. Under his direction, the LVMH-owned Spanish house became one of luxury’s hottest fashion brands. The Northern Irish designer was appointed creative director of the brand in September 2013. One of the industry’s most acclaimed British designers, Jonathan Anderson, the eponymous creative director of the brand JW Anderson, is internationally considered a real talent.
Anderson, named Designer of the Year at The Fashion Awards 2023, announced on his Instagram account: "Eleven years ago, I was given the most incredible opportunity: to write a chapter in a story that is now 179 years old... Over the last eleven years, I have been lucky enough to be surrounded by people with the imagination, skills, tenacity, and resourcefulness to find a way to say ‘yes’ to all my wildly ambitious ideas. Looking back, I’ve come to realize that a brand is not built on the first show, or even the first year of shows, it’s built slowly season upon season, year upon year, on what is right for a brand. Since day one, I envisioned creating a cultural brand. This idea relied heavily on the trust and generosity of the many artists, craftspeople, estates, foundations, museums, and galleries who contributed their work. I am sincerely grateful to you all. They say all good things must come to an end, but I disagree. While my own chapter draws to a close, Loewe’s story will continue for many years to come, and I will look on it with pride."
Jonathan Anderson is one of the leading designers of his generation, earning both critical acclaim and commercial success with the collections he designs for his label JW Anderson, and as creative director of Loewe.
Anderson attended the London College of Fashion and launched his first Menswear collection in 2008 under the newly created JW Anderson label. In 2010, he expanded into Womenswear, and in 2013, after LVMH took a minority stake in his brand, he was named the creative director of Loewe. Two years later, he made history when he became the first individual to be awarded both womenswear and menswear designer of the year at the British Fashion Awards. In 2018, he was appointed to Loewe’s board of directors.
Outside the world of fashion, Anderson is a dedicated supporter of art and craft. In 2016, he founded the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize, the world´s first international award for contemporary craft, and in 2017, he curated Disobedient Bodies, an exhibition at The Hepworth Wakefield in England.
