For forty years, the Dutch duo Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin have interpreted photography as seduction without ever falling into the scheme of only aesthetics. While waiting to celebrate the big anniversary next year with the big retrospective at Kunstmuseum Den Haag titled "Can Love Be a Photograph?", Inez and Vinoodh are on display in Paris during the Paris Photo fair, with a preview of the upcoming exhibition at interior designer India Mahdavi’s Project Room.
For over two decades, the meticulous and audacious imagery created by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin has challenged and inspired the field of fashion photography. Working together since 1986, the Dutch partnership rose to fame in the early 1990s. Experimenting with the latest digital imaging technologies, their early work captured the imagination of art critics, who were mesmerized by the sophisticated interplay of elegance and horror in their images. As their notoriety burgeoned in the art world, the fashion community became equally captivated by their early editorial work for British style magazine The Face, which added high-octane glamour to their dark, unsettling aesthetic. Collaborating with Belgian designer Véronique Leroy, they formulated a vocabulary of attenuated predatory figures in hyperreal environments, flying in the face of the prevailing 'grunge' movement and signaling the end of that genre of fashion photography. Exerting considerable influence in fashion and in art, van Lamsweerde and Matadin are exceptional in balancing successful careers in both.
The exhibition named "Think Love" on display at Paris Photo fair, features works shot in Marfa, Texas, with the new iPhone 17, spotlighting another artist duo: son Charles Matadin and partner Natalie Brumley, who share a kiss under a red veil. The image accentuates both the ecstasy of romantic love and the introspective nature of intimate connection. Referencing Gustav Klimt's The Kiss (1907-1908), Charles' structured denim emphasizes the masculine, while Natalie's swirling lace patterns, the feminine. While one might imagine oneself on the road back to Heaven, the mountains and the road behind them point to a future where protecting the environment is key to their survival.
