Memphis. 40 years of kitsch and elegance

02/06/2021 - 01/23/2022
Vitra Design Museum Gallery

The Italian design collective Memphis is one of the most extraordinary phenomena in design over the last few decades. It was created in the winter of 1980/81 when a group of young designers gathered around the Italian designer and architect Ettore Sottsass who wanted to break out of the dogmas of industrial design. As early as September 1981, the group gained international attention with the presentation of its first collection in the Arc'74 gallery in Milan. With their flashy colors and patterns, the Memphis designs looked like they had come out of a comic and shaped a completely new look in which pop culture, advertising aesthetics and postmodernism were combined in a wild mix. To mark the 40th year the group was founded, the exhibition “Memphis. 40 Years of Kitsch and Elegance «in the Vitra Design Museum Gallery with exhibits such as furniture, lights, bowls, drawings, sketches and photographs an insight into the world of Memphis. The exhibits include works by Ettore Sottsass, Michele De Lucchi, Martine Bedin, Michael Graves, Barbara Radice, Peter Shire, Nathalie Du Pasquier and Shiro Kuramata, among others.
