Tatsuo Miyajima’s UCCA solo exhibition is a visual exploration of the passage of time and the Buddhist cycle of life, death and rebirth.

One of Japan’s leading contemporary artists, Miyajima creates beautiful electronic sculptures composed of steel, mirrors and blinking LED counters that display the numerals between 1 and 9. The artist carefully choreographs his “LED gadgets” in a way that both heightens our awareness of time and provokes skepticism about the ways we perceive and experience time.

UCCA’s Big Hall will be the site for three of Miyajima’s sculptures: HŌTŌ, a bejeweled pagoda whose mirrored surfaces are inlaid with differently-sized LED counters; Floating Time, which uses projection video to flood a three-dimensional space with flashing numbers of various sizes and brilliant colours; and MEGA DEATH, a chilling installation of over 2400 LED displays counting up and down to zero, representing the collective victims of genocide in the 20th century.
