LUCE DAL LINO BY MASTERS OF LINEN – Linen getting into a state
Milan Design week april 13th 2010

Under the artistic direction of Teresa Sapey and Ornella Bignami, 50 international designers (Sam Baron, Paola Navone, Noe Duchaufour Lawrance, Francis Azambourg Matteo Thun ...) and companies (Home Missoni, Max Mara, The Perla ...) interpret their vision of the lampshade. The result is a magical hook set in Via Montenapoleone in Milan from April 13th to April 19th. We met Soverin Dimitri, head of communications of the CELC (European Confederation of Linen and Hemp) whose Masters of Linen is a subsidiary. Masters of Linen is the interface between the European linen and other stakeholders. He explains that linen, noble and ancestral matter is mainly produced in France, Belgium and Holland and it is processed in Europe. Linen is « bio-green ». In fact, it grows on a crop rotation (every seven years) that aerates the earth, it just need sun and rain (unlike cotton, which requires a lot of irrigation) and doesn't requires fertilizer or pesticides.

Linen is therefore a dimension of sustainable development. The product is viable and healthy. Not pollutant. But did you know? We can do anything with this material. 30% of production goes to the lifestyle and decor, 60% is used in fashion, 90% of the outcome is for textile industry. The 10% remaning is for the growth sector of innovative and composite materials. The federation of linen aggregate 10,000 companies, who believe that linen could become an alternative to synthetic fibers, specially in furnitures. The example of Frédéric Morand in collaboration with the designer Francis Azambourg for DCS (Composite Design Solutions) is a clear demonstration. Their Lin 94 chair is made of 94% of plant fiber.Another example is the first tennis racket in linen fiber : created by Artengo, the artengo 820 Flax Fiber will be distributed at Décathlon stores. Light and easy to hand, the flax ( mixed with a composite carbon fiber) absorbs vibrations and shocks during the stroke. The global textile crisis impels to find new markets, and this look like just the beginning...To be continued.

HOOK PAR JEAN NOUVEL - Superstudio Piu
Milan Design week April 13th 2010

New coating systems for applications in architecture and interior design.

At a time when technology can remove spaces, Methis wanted to renovate workspace contexte.Hook Partition Wall System produced by Methis and designed by Jean Nouvel presents: an architecture of metal as a quote from Jean Prouvé over a wall, a true system of continuous construction in junctions which disappear into the folds of the metal. And its skin, wrinkled like paper, punched with regularity and lacquered, becomes a wall. A wall with a "wrinkled skin built to capture light and to give life to places" a wall that goes beyond the presence and boundaries of the horizontal and vertical seam.

Thanks to the collaboration with Jean Nouvel, Methis anticipates the future of the division septum. It offers a high impact project including a summary of extreme performance, aesthetics, environmental sustainability and security. The wall becomes a continuous wall and the wall itself, a complete device. Innovative and unique.

Directed by Jules Wright, installations of Yves Behar, Tokujin Yoshioka, Gwenael Nicolas, Vincent Van Duysen, Tokujin Yoshioka and Roger Van der Heide offer very different experiences of Swarovski crystal and an alternate poetic dimension to a playful imaginary ...

Focus On DREAM CLOUD - Rogier van der Heide
In a darkened room a cloud of light, like a shooting star, surprises the visitor.... The installation of Rogier van der Heide for Swarovski 2010, a proposal that enhances the natural properties of the crystal...

How did you conceive Dream Cloud ?
Rogier van der Heide : “I imagined the Swarovski Crystal Palace of Milan as an evanescent crystal cloud, a 3d sculpture that expresses the nature, the magic, imagination and beauty...Dream Cloud consist of thousands of small untrated pure crystal, fluctuating in the air and trasforming the black space giving a point of gravity on which focus the viewer's attention...On the floor a magic and surreal carpet of clouds in motion while above crystals fluctuate, bathed by a bluelight of the moon...

From sofas and chairs for {{Steiner) to knives for Laguiole, from Idylle bottle for Guerlain to the candelabra for Christofle and even the model of a room for Hotel O.. The full Ora-Ito is unveiled during this {design week. Strictly black.

Very different creations
“The challenge was to bring together all its proposals in a single exposure and i was very pleased that everyone has agreed. It's really interesting to have generated much partnership whit brands who are icons, myths in their field.

Scenography
"I conceived it myself with a very little budget. All the pieces are very different and have a strong personality, but we feel there are linked and we understand that they comes from the same mind. The idea was to make it organic and rational. "

Black
“The black color gave me the possibility of flattening products and put a chair, a refrigerator and a table at the same level...It was a question of hierarchy and homogeneity...I like the timeless side of black...which allowed me to give a thread, a consistency. To me it is a timeless color that transcends eras and trends.

Past and unreadable, yet so incomprehensibly familiar.
These twelve pieces express for Andrea Branzi « our relationship with the ancient world, not just an outward...Because this relationship is not just about the style but the misterious nature of the objects that have a soul and still dialogue with the man ».

Interview with Rudy Volpi - Between art and design

We have always produced limited editions and tried to offer our space to researc, a lavoratory for designers. We opened in 1197 but before we had another space, an art gallery. In the 80s we worked with Alchimia, Memphis...

You are now in the Milan design scene since 30 years. How the concept of Fuori Salone has changed in years?

Well, at the beginning of the Fair, the Fuori Salone brought together different proposals that were ouside marketing and business requirements. There were projects and ideas with a real research dimension. An open approach between art and design

DISCO SEVRES – Petite histoire des formes
Milan Design week Aprile 15th 2010

After the Capitol Museum of Rome and the international museum of ceramics of Faenza in 2009, Sèvres - Cité de la céramique is in Milan for the first time, during the international furniture fair. Invited by the French cultural centrer of Milan, the exhibition DISCOSÈVRES, une petite histoire des formes offers a rare glimpse of contemporary creations of Sèvres porcelain manufacture, from April 15th to May 7th 2010.

<sld(discosevres)|right>The question of the form a long history in the Manufacture de Sèvres, since its inception in the eighteenth century. Jean Claude Duplessis, King's goldsmith and fist great « designer » rooted in the fundamentals of Sevres concerns of contemporary design : the functionality of the object, adaptation to the aesthetics of his time, find the appropriate form to the decor. Jacques Emile Ruhlmann is one of his brillant successor, paving the way for numerous research, conducted both by designers and artists. Creating a form at Sèvres Manufacture remains a curious exercise, witha a specific ritual : create a blank page, integrate the forms of Sèvres heritage, renovate it and let another creator re-appropriate it.

The exhibition offers a walk through wo opposite perspective : the continuity of the blank form, from Duplessis to Pierre Charpin and ruptures (which are only apparent) proposed by several artits and designers such as Pierre Soulages, Ettore Sottsass, Arman, Christian Biecher and many others. After an idea by Adrien Rovero, nearly 70 works are exhbited to illustrate the impulse that each new collaborations gaved. Animated vases, roses in porcelain bisque grows in a greenhouse, the actions of ceramists mingle with those of dancers...as an invitation to discover the poetic repertoire continually enriched and the excellent know-how of this City.

Exhibition commented by David Caméo, directors since 2003 of Sèvres – Cité de la Ceramique.

"We have an exhbition policy that i will describe as ambituous, offering a look at the production of Sèvres, with an obvious reference to our history, our heritage of shapes and designs foundation which have built our success, our image, but replacing it whenever we can, in a dynamic perspective. It is very important to remember that both the institution still exists, as it always produces with traditional manual techniques passed down from generation to generation since 1740 and that, at the same time, it breaks new ground by working in concert with guest artists."
