For Artistic Director Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, dOCUMENTA (13) is a field in a state of definition suggested by the phrase, “The dance was very frenetic, lively, rattling, clanging, rolling, contorted and lasted for a long time."

As a preview to dOCUMENTA (13), and as a part of it, various activities have already been realized. These include a conference in Turin in September 2009; the AND AND AND projects, which have been ongoing since June 2010; the installation on the summer solstice of 2010 of the sculpture "Idee di Pietra" by Giuseppe Penone in Karlsaue Park; and the screening on Valentine’s Day of Pierre Huyghe’s film "The Host and the Cloud" at Kassel’s Gloria cinema.

Additionally, two artists’ books have been published by Hatje Cantz: Guillermo Faivovich and "The Campo del Cielo Meteorites – Vol. 1: El Taco", and "seeing studies", edited by Natascha Sadr Haghighian and Ashkan Sepahvand for the institute for incongruous translation. And finally, the first publications within the "100 Notes – 100 Thoughts" series of notebooks have appeared and will be followed by many more.

Art Berlin Contemporary has invited 129 galleries from 18 countries. The innovative fair format was developed by Berlin galleries as an appealing platform for international galleries to present individual works by contemporary artists from around the world in Berlin.

ABC Art Berlin Contemporary will take place from September 13th–16th at Station Berlin, located in the Berlin neighbourhood of Kreuzberg, and is also now a partner in the newly founded Berlin Art Week. While in past years the selection of artworks was based on an overarching theme, this year galleries have been asked to submit their own positions. abc’s innovative fair format was developed by Berlin galleries with international galleries in mind, encouraging them to present individual positions in contemporary art from around the world in Berlin. The selection and compiling of works was the responsibility of abc organizers. Participating galleries will not be presenting their program, but rather acting as producers for their artists.

129 galleries from 18 countries will participate featuring 148 artistic positions: 66 galleries from Berlin, 8 from Vienna, 6 from London, 4 each from Dubai, New York and Zurich, 3 from Munich, 2 each from Brussels, Cape Town, Leipzig, Frankfurt, Malmö, Milan, Paris and Rome; and 1 each from Antwerp, Beijing, Catania, Cologne, Copenhagen, Dresden, Dusseldorf, Glasgow, Hamburg, Helsinki, Hong Kong, Innsbruck, Istanbul, Jeddah, Karlsruhe, Naples, Prague and Seoul.

In its eighth edition, the PREVIEW BERLIN ART FAIR will be expanding its dynamic profile: In Hangar2 of Berlin's former Tempelhof Airport, established galleries will now show their promising artistic positions alongside international newcomers. For the first time ever, there will also be solo walls, with a focus continuing to be placed on emerging artists. This survey allows the PREVIEW BERLIN to reflect what makes the Berlin art landscape so unique from an international perspective, allowing the latest trends to be visualised.

This year, the PREVIEW BERLIN will be held for the first time within the framework of the newly launched BERLIN ART WEEK (11.-16.9.2012), uniting under one umbrella the exhibition format abc – art berlin contemporary as well as the most important institutions of contemporary art in Berlin (National Gallery, Society of Friends of the National Gallery, KW, Berlinische Galerie, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein [n.b.k.], Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst [NGBK] e.V., c/o Berlin, Haus der Kulturen der Welt and Akademie der Künste). With the BERLIN ART WEEK, participants' profiles will be sharpened, synergies created and energies pooled to strengthen confidence in Berlin as an art location.

With the FOCUS ACADEMY, the PREVIEW BERLIN has been turning to art universities since 2009 in a new format. In 2012, the graduates of eight German art academies will participate. The intention is to offer these artists the opportunity to show their work to a large art community at the moment of transition from university studies to artistic independence, allowing them to gain initial experience on the art market. In addition to the Bauhaus University Weimar, the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design Kiel and the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg, all of which were already represented at the art fair last year, Giebichenstein Castle Halle, the Art University Kassel, the Berlin University of the Arts, the HfG Offenbach and the Berlin Weissensee School of Art will participate in the 2012 FOCUS ACADEMY.

2012 marks a new turn in Art Moscow history. The project entered a new era at the beginning of the millennium by assimilating post-Soviet ideology. At around this time, contemporary art started to become an important symbol of the glamorous lifestyle. For years, contemporary art was influenced by the evolution of the Russian civil society. Current and past events in the field of Russian art will be the main topics of discussion at Art Moscow

Panel discussions will cover contemporary art development in Russia, as well as new marketing opportunities:
"Curating in the post-Soviet territories," "Making the art market transparent," "How to attract intellectuals to contemporary art," "Detection of main components in the contemporary art market," "The art of collecting: there is no need to be a billionaire to collect art," "Philanthropy in art: the presentation of foundations," "Corporate engagement in art and culture: the Western experience and new opportunities in Russia," "The Western perception of Russian contemporary art," "How contemporary art can enhance the attractiveness of cities," "Attracting regions – the creation of a platform: art, politics and new curatorial structures," "Developing platforms for engaging regions/provinces: art and new curatorial structures."

Galleries from Russia, Cuba, Serbia, Ukraine, Germany, Portugal, UK, Italy, Hungary, Austria, France, Japan, and Iran will have exhibitions this year at Art Moscow

Moscow galleries such as Triumph Gallery, Fine Art Gallery, Galerie Iragui, Eastern Gallery, Frolov Gallery, Glaz Gallery, and the Collection Gallery from Kyiv have been showcasing their works for many years now.

Havana galleries La Acacia Gallery and Collage Habana Gallery, Zvono Gallery (Belgrade), Knoll Gallery (Vienna-Budapest), and Whitestone gallery (Tokyo) are among the galleries attracting the most attention at Art Moscow.

Art Moscow newcomers this year are Morgen Contemporary Gallery (Berlin), Cordeiros (Lisbon), Galleria Goethe (Bolzano), 11.12 Gallery (Moscow), and Blast Gallery (Paris). The presence of three famous galleries from Tehran (Assar Gallery, Ariana Gallery and Tirgun Image Works Gallery) will draw special attention to Iranian artists.

The theme of the 2012 Printemps de Septembre is History. Curated by art historian and critic Paul Ardenne, “History is mine!” brings together some forty artists who, each in their own way, address the question of history today. But then how could it be otherwise, given that all of us, artists or otherwise, are shaped and moved by history? Not a universal history, but a singular one, revisited and rewritten by each individual as the key material of their “life-novel.”

Printemps 2012 will be articulated around its usual venues (with the exception of Les Jacobins, currently being renovated) with a string of associate venues further along the Garonne chosen in order to diversify content and maintain close cooperation with local and regional players. Likewise, there will be a special emphasis on interventions in public space, which is eminently the space of sharing and conviviality. This festive impulse will be heighted by the Nomadic Nights, especially this year. The International Festival of Art Schools, inaugurated in 2011, will be housed this year at the École des beaux-arts.

This will be the last edition to be held in the autumn. In 2013, Le Printemps will be held in May, thus going back to the time of year, spring, that inspired the name it has kept over its 23 years of activity.

The Taipei Biennial 2012 is conceived as an exhibition that negotiates historical consciousness through an imaginative engagement with the past. Based on the assumption that a common ground of the global art system is the experience and effects of modernization, the biennial centers on the way that artists across the globe are articulating and negotiating this experience and its coming-into-being. The re-visioning of modernity, the re-writing of its master narratives, and the re-drafting of its constitutional resources is a trans-disciplinary project of global scale. This activity is driven by the urge to find a vantage point and speaking position from which we can relate to the frontiers of modernization, their present forms and their long shadows, and the role of art in their current transformations.

Curated by Berlin-based curator and critic Anselm Franke, this eighth edition takes place at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum and further locations in the City of Taipei.
