Mending in Art and Fashion

A new aesthetic phenomenon is spreading across the worlds of art and fashion: mending aesthetics. Mending and recycling are gaining creative momentum, producing stunning experimental creations. Recycled materials, dead stock and sophisticated mending techniques beget rewarding stories and ornamentation giving new life to clothes and providing fertile ground for novel aesthetic expressions. How the contamination of disciplines can lead the fashion industry to be more sustainable both from an economic and social point of view?

A panel with industry professionals moderated by Ied - Istituto europeo di design will try to understand how fashion is evolving today.

Fashion is not only identity or the search for an identity, but never before has it been a megaphone for narrating socio-economic events or launching ethical messages. Starting from the Las Manuelas project - born as an experiment with Ied fashion design students with the idea of proposing new values and ways of doing things in fashion - possible or alternative scenarios to the fashion system will be found, trying to redefine or clarify key words such as sustainability, luxury, inclusiveness, technology, contamination and the future.

David Lapof, Ied Research Center, will moderate the interventions of Isabel Berz, director of Las Manuelas project, Kristian Snorre Andersen, co founder and ceo of Adorno and Julia Weems Fashion Director at Ied Barcelona with possible incursions of additional contributors.

Ied and Adorno present a collaborative journey integrating a diverse community of artisans, street artists and institutions resulting in eleven scarves handcrafted by Peruvian alpaca breeders.

Las Manuelas is a creative community without barriers, a collective commitment, a platform to promote the connection and horizontal collaboration between Peruvian alpaca artisans with artists, designers, art directors, curators and creative minds from all over the world. The exhibition takes place in the spaces of Tableau Gallery, where an effective installation highlights not only the fabrics made from the precious natural alpaca wool, hand-dyed and knitted on the basis of the artwork of contemporary artists, but also the matrix on which the artisans patiently worked to understand the pattern and the best technique to make the final fabric.

The project is brought to Copenhagen thanks to the contribution of Ied-Istituto europeo di design who was involved since the early stages and provided continuous support throughout the development.
