Whitney Museum of American Art: 2 Lizards

Exhibitions
September 30 2022 -> February 28 2023

2 Lizards, a film by artists Meriem Bennani (b. 1988, Rabat, Morocco; lives and works in New York, NY) and Orian Barki (b. 1985, Israel; lives and works in New York, NY), depicts a surrealist view of the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic as it unfolded in New York City. In the film, two animated anthropomorphized lizards serve as protagonists, moving through a city gripped by a pandemic, extended isolation, and cries for social justice reform. It highlights the helplessness and uncertainty experienced by many at the time, as well as the unexpected moments of shared community and connection. Originally released as an eight-part episodic series on Bennani’s Instagram account, the Whitney’s presentation of 2 Lizards is its first institutional screening as a narrative film. This installation is organized by Rujeko Hockley, Arnhold Associate Curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

MoMA: Just about midtown

Exhibitions
October 09 2022 -> February 18 2023

The Museum of Modern Art announces Just Above Midtown: 1974 to the Present. It will be the first museum exhibition to focus exclusively on Just Above Midtown (JAM), an art gallery and self-described laboratory for African American artists and artists of color that was led by Linda Goode Bryant from 1974 until 1986.

Initially located in the heart of New York’s major commercial gallery district, JAM was founded by Linda Goode Bryant with the explicit purpose of “being in but not of the art world.” By the time JAM closed its doors, it had established itself as one of the most vibrant and influential alternative art spaces in New York, embracing work by abstract, self-taught artists, organizing groundbreaking exhibitions that thematized the idea of mixture in art and society, and fostering critiques of the commercialization of art.

Organized by Thomas J. Lax, Curator, with Lilia Rocio Taboada, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Media and Performance, in collaboration with Linda Goode Bryant. With thanks to Marielle Ingram and Argyro Nicolaou.

Support for the exhibition is provited by MoMA’s Wallis Annenberg Fund for Innovation in Contemporary Art through the Annenberg Foundation.

MoMA Audio is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Co-curated by Sally Berman and Sacha Jenkins, Chief Creative Officer of Mass Appeal, Hip-Hop: Conscious, Unconscious presents images ranging from iconic staples of visual culture to rare and intimate portraits of hip-hop’s biggest stars from legendary pioneers including Nas, Tupac, Notorious B.I.G, and Mary J. Blige to modern icons such as Nicki Minaj, Megan Thee Stallion, and Cardi B.

The works on view traverse intersecting themes such as the role of women in hip-hop; hip-hop’s regional and stylistic diversification and rivalries; a humanistic lens into the1970s-Bronx street gangs whose members contributed to the birth of hip-hop; and the mainstream breakthrough that saw a grassroots movement become a global phenomenon.

The Fury is an exhibition of new works by Shirin Neshat. This show comprises a double-channel video installation and a series of black and white photographs with hand-drawn calligraphy of poems by Iranian poet Forough Farrokhzad. These multidimensional bodies of work continue upon her incisive artmaking practice that focuses on the female body as both a battleground for ideology and a source of strength. By questioning and drawing attention to the relationship between the masculine and feminine, the individual and the collective these highly charged images address issues of power within patriarchal societies.

The interactive sculpture Love’s h|Edge realized by Brooklyn-based Almost Studio.
Almost Studio’s design takes the form of a heart-shaped hedge row. The vertical bar symbol stationed between the letters h and E is a visual reference to the sculpture itself and realization of love’s boundless nature. The installation takes cues from the whimsical, otherworldly qualities of Alice in Wonderland, while also pulling from aspects of Surrealism and the theatricality of Times Square.
