The kimono, literally what is worn, appeared more than a thousand years ago and is a representation of their national culture and sensitivity for the Japanese. At the beginning of the Edo era (1603-1868), it became the traditional garment par excellence, worn by all Japanese, regardless of social status or gender. A golden age that saw the extraordinary development of its production and the birh of a fashion culture, thanks to the infatuation of the entertainment world. Celebrities and trendsetters of the time, kabuki actors in particular, became the first Japanese fashion icons.

Although it timidly reached European shores at the end of the 17th century, it was in the 1850s, with the opening of Japan to foreign trade, that the kimono was exported to the West, fascinated by its exotic character. The enthusiasm generated by its shape and fabrics profoundly and radically transformed fashion on the continent a few decades later. It subsequently surpassed its status as a symbol and lost none of its beauty in the hands of the world's greatest designers (such as John Galliano or Alexander McQueen) or in the streets of the archipelago, revisited in innovative and sometimes subversive ways by the young Japanese.

In his tentatively painted canvases, the French artist reveals a free and lively consciousness. Bringing together some sixty works, including almost fifteen pieces produced specially for this exhibition, Hyber creates a school open to all hypotheses at the heart of the Fondation Cartier. Visitors are invited to explore the different “classrooms” according to a layout that follows the artist’s meandering thoughts.

Artist, sower, entrepreneur, poet, Hyber is the author of a prolific body of work that comprises almost 20,000 pieces, including 3,000 paintings. Flouting categories, he takes art into all spheres of existence: mathematics, neuroscience, business, history, astrophysics, as well as love, the body, and the evolution of living species.

The MEP presents the first retrospective in France dedicated to internationally acclaimed South African photographer and activist Zanele Muholi. Her work documents the lives of the black Lgbtqia+ community and the people who make it up. It is fifty years since Pablo Picasso died, on 8 April 1973 at Notre-Dame-de-Vie, his home in Mougins. The body of work that he left behind had a profound impact on the entire 20th century. For this anniversary year, the Musée National Picasso-Paris has invited the British designer Sir Paul Smith, known for his work with colour, tailoring and unexpected details, to lead the artistic direction of an exceptional exhibition showcasing the museum’s collection. This exhibition created in collaboration with Sir Paul Smith is curated around masterpieces from the collection. The designer’s unique approach to the works invites the public to view them through a contemporary lens and underlines the continuing relevance of Picasso’s work in today’s world. The visions of these two artists sometimes converge, for example around their shared love of objects, dress and playfulness, thus leading to comparisons and a spectacular, highly inventive approach to the presentation of the works. Also on show throughout the exhibition are works by contemporary international artists. In their shared desire to open up new interpretations to Picasso’s work, Guillermo Kuitca, Obi Okigbo, Mickalene Thomas and Chéri Samba interrogate his image and putting their own slant on some of his artistic innovations. The exhibition is curated by Cécile Debray and Joanne Snrech, with art direction by Paul Smith.

"1997 Fashion Big Bang" is an exhibition focusing on the year 1997, a watershed year in the history of contemporary fashion.
1997 was both a high point of 1990s fashion and the gateway to the new millennium. It brought a flurry of collections, shows, new appointments, openings and events that defined the fashion scene as we know it today. Such was its impact that 1997 can be thought of as the launching pad for 21st century fashion. The chronological layout of the exhibition features over 50 silhouettes from the Palais Galliera collections, along with loans from museums and international collectors and fashion houses. And it also includes videos and some outstanding archive documents.

The exhibition 1997 Fashion Big Bang is an invitation to discover or to relive key events from this ‘explosive’ year in fashion history. To discover from 7 March to 16 July 2023.
