Jeu de Paume: Tina Modotti
See on Map
Exhibitions
February 13 2024 -> May 12 2024
*
Jeu de Paume pays tribute to Tina Modotti (1896-1942) through a major exhibition, the largest ever devoted to the photographer and political activist of Italian origin in Paris.

Tina Modotti (Udine, Italy, 1896 - Mexico City, 1942) was an active participant in some of the most important historical events of the first half of the 20th century, including the massive European economic migration to North America at the turn of the century, the birth of silent film on the West Coast of the United States, the post-revolutionary agrarian reform in Mexico, the political muralist movement, the recognition of indigenous Mexican culture, the entry of women into the public space, the struggle between Stalinists and Trotskyists after the 1917 Russian Revolution and the Spanish Civil War.

She emerged as a pioneering woman photographer during the 1920s and her influence on later Mexican photography extended from her near-contemporary Manuel Álvarez Bravo to Graciela Iturbide. Modotti learned about photography thanks to Edward Weston, but her practice went beyond the American’s formalist approach and she quickly developed a personal vision of her own.

Modotti joined the Mexican Communist Party (CPM) in 1927 and used her camera to denounce the plight of the poor, paying particular attention to conveying the experience of Mexican women. After being expelled from Mexico as a communist in 1930, she spent several years in the Soviet Union, where her photographic militancy was transformed into activism. She died in Mexico City in 1942.

Musée de Montmartre: Auguste Herbin
See on Map
Exhibitions
March 15 2024 -> September 15 2024
*
The Musée de Montmartre devotes a retrospective exhibition to Auguste Herbin (1882-1960).

The painter Auguste Herbin is the best-kept secret of the modern art adventure. Yet he played an active part in all the creative breakthroughs of the 20th century: fauvism, cubism, abstraction. The man who lived at the Bateau-Lavoir for eighteen years achieved, in his ultimate style, a plastic alphabet with universal appeal.

The Musée de Montmartre Jardins Renoir is the first Parisian museum to devote a retrospective exhibition to Auguste Herbin, in the city where he created all his life. It retraces the painter's seven creative periods: postimpressionism, fauvism, cubism, monumental objects, new figuration, and first and second abstraction, often with never-before-seen works. Here, Herbin regains his rightful place in the history of modern art and presents us with first-rate works from each of his creative periods.

Exhibitions
March 27 2024 -> July 01 2024

Constantin Brancusi has never been the subject of an exhibition on such a scale. An ensemble of nearly two hundred sculptures, along with photographs, drawings, films, archives, tools, and furniture from the studio will be exhibited. This roll-out was produced to mark the complete relocation of Brancusi's studio in the framework of Centre Pompidou renovation work and provides a unique opportunity to review the art of this immense 20th-century artist in a new light. The studio has been the jewel in the museum's collection since it was bequeathed to the French State in 1957, and forms the matrix of this retrospective which brings together original ensembles of sculptures, thanks to major loans from leading international museums.

Musée Marmottan Monet: En Jeu! Artists and Sport (1870-1930)
See on Map
Exhibitions
April 04 2024 -> September 01 2024
*
To coincide with the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, held in Paris for the first time in 100 years, the Musée Marmottan Monet will be presenting an exhibition titled “En Jeu! Artists and Sport (1870-1930)” from 4 April to 1 September 2024. It will look back at the visual history of sport between 1870 and 1930 via more than a hundred major artworks from public and private European, American, and Japanese collections (Musée National du Sport, Nice; Musée d’Orsay; Centre Pompidou; Musée Fabre, Montpellier; National Gallery of Art, Washington; Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven; Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, etc.).

From Impressionism to Cubism, the exhibition will show how sports and sportspeople were made into icons of modernity and the avant-garde. It will explore the ethical challenges and aesthetic aspects of how sports were perceived by artists such as Monet, Degas, Caillebotte, Toulouse-Lautrec, Eakins, Richer, Maillol, Rodin, Bellows, Lhote, Delaunay, Metzinger and Gromaire, including elitist sports such as horse-riding, sailing and fencing and age-old sports such as wrestling, boxing and ball games. It will also look at the metaphorical meanings of the heroic figure of the artist as a sportsperson, characterized by determination, stamina, and a form of resistance.
