The exhibition, produced by 24 Ore Cultura – Gruppo 24 Ore and promoted by the Comune di Milano-Cultura, and realized thanks to the collaboration of the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, brings together an exceptional corpus of photos and documents of the French photoreporter: over 100 original prints together with negatives, publications of magazines of the time, documents and letters coming from the collection of the Fondation HCB.

An unprecedented excursus describing two key-moments in the history of China: the fall of the Kuomintang and the establishment of the communist regime (1948-1949) and Mao Zedong’s “Great Leap Forward” (1958).

An important moment in the history of world photojournalism, lived through the personal approach of the master Cartier-Bresson, who was the first to highlight – through the eye of his lens – important themes of the changes in contemporary Chinese history, being also able to present to the Western world aspects hidden by the regime’s propaganda such as the exploitation of human resources and the omnipresence of militia.

On November 25th, 1948, Henri-Cartier-Bresson was commissioned by Life magazine to shoot a story on the “last days of Beijing” before the arrival of the Maoist troops. Having gone for two weeks, we would stay for ten months, mainly in the Shanghai area, witnessing the fall of the city of Nanjing held by Kuomintang, then forced to stay in Shanghai under Communist control for four months, leaving China a few days before the proclamation of the People’s Republic of China (October 1, 1949).

“Role Play” is an exhibition curated by Melissa Harris that explores the notions of the search, projection and invention of possible alternative identities, hovering between authentic, idealized, and universal selves through a selection of photographic, video and performing works by 11 international image-based artists.

Playing with gender tropes, stereotypes, sense of place, and future perspectives, the artists who make up “Role Play” interrogate individuality as we know it and as it might be. Role-playing, creating alter-egos, and proliferation of selves are possible strategies for understanding each individual’s essence and persona.

Cultural Event: Steve McQueen

Exhibitions
March 31 2022 -> July 31 2022

Exhibition organized by Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan, in collaboration with Tate Modern, London.

Turner Prize winning artist and Oscar winning filmmaker Steve McQueen (London, 1969; lives and works in London and Amsterdam) has created some of the most significant works of moving image in the last 30 years. Taking a radical look at the human condition, its dramas and fragility, McQueen’s touching and thought-provoking work asks important questions about urgent issues, such as the construction of identity, belonging, and the right to freedom.

“Sunshine State” presents an immersive experience of Steve McQueen’s unique visual language. The six film works and one sculpture in the exhibition are among the most important of the artist’s career, representing free narrative models and unexpected points of view on wide-ranging, intersectional aspects of historical and contemporary social contexts. For Pirelli HangarBicocca, McQueen has conceived a site-specific exhibition project that unfolds in the Navate and Cubo spaces, and on the exterior of the building. Through a non-chronological layout, the exhibition features a survey of Steve McQueen’s career in the visual arts, highlighting the evolution of his practice over the last two decades. Taken together, the works presented here form a visual narrative, revealing the artist’s radical take on reality and offering an opportunity to imagine new readings of McQueen’s poetics.

The title of the exhibition evokes the artist’s new video installation, Sunshine State (2022), commissioned and produced by the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) 2022, which is shown here in its world premiere.

Cultural Event: Useless Bodies?

Exhibitions
March 31 2022 -> August 22 2022

Spanning more than 3,000 square meters, “Useless Bodies?” is an exhibition by the artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset and one of the most ambitious thematic investigations realized by Fondazione Prada to date.

Conceived for four gallery spaces and the courtyard of its Milan venue, the exhibition explores the present condition of the body in the post-industrial age in which it seems that our physical presence is losing its centrality or is even completely superfluous. This shift impacts every aspect of our lives: from our working conditions, to our health, our interpersonal relationships, and the way we retain information. The exhibition “Useless Bodies?” also explores how we physically adapt to a world increasingly based on two-dimensional imagery, not least in the light of the current pandemic.

Following the exhibition path from the Podium, to the Nord gallery, to the Cisterna, the audience encounter several immersive installations. The Milan premises of Fondazione Prada are transformed into a series of different universes, each with their own atmosphere, theme, and aesthetics.

"Useless Bodies?" is located inside the Podium, North Gallery, Cisterna and Fondazione's external spaces.

The extraordinary adventure of David Bowie, after his return to Europe in the mid-70s, relives in the shots of Andrew Kent.

The exhibition "David Bowie The Passenger" tells, through the images and memories of the American photographer Andrew Kent, a very specific period in the life of David Bowie. Between 1975 and 1976 , in fact, Bowie decides to leave behind the American experience, culminating in the success of an LP like Young Americans and the shooting of the film The Man Who Fell to Earth , to return to his native Europe and re-establish his career.

The exhibition is an Italian preview, and consists of 50 shots , several memorabilia and original documents from the Kent archive . Alongside the photographic journey, the protagonists of Bowie's European adventure in the mid-1970s will be faithfully and philologically reconstructed: from the carriage of the train that took him to Moscow, to his hotel room in Paris. And more clothes, microphones, cameras, records, models, posters, various memorabilia and projections complete the exhibition, accompanying the visitor on a spectacular and immersive journey within one of the most fascinating parentheses in the career of the icon of popular culture.

The large-scale solo exhibition “David LaChapelle. I Believe in Miracles” is the result of a journey of artistic research lasting a lifetime and that presents a previously unseen and, to some extent, surprising David LaChapelle.

With an unprecedented project, the Museum of Cultures hosts an exhibition itinerary that critical look at the human soul with an investigation into its various facets of joy, pain, solitude and passions, insecurities and ideals.

Humankind and its relationship with itself, human beings in the surrounding environment and in society, humankind in Nature.

The exhibition includes over 90 works, including large formats, site-specific photos, new productions and a video installation, which unfold in a flowing and captivating narrative, through the artist’s very personal vision of a "gestural" kind of photography, that is a snapshot of the present while ‘alert’ for the future ahead.

Since the first furniture was made in 1960 with architect Leonardo Ferrari, Rossi’s production reflects the relationship between the architectural, urban, archaeological and objective scale. Since 1979 it has opened up to the world of industrial production and high craftsmanship, making furniture and products for use first with Alessi, then with Artemide, DesignTex, Bruno Longoni Atelier of Furniture, Molteni & C | UniFor, Richard-Ginori, and Rosenthal, Up & Up (UpGroup today).

During nearly twenty years of work, he developed more than 70 pieces of furniture and furnishings, many of which are still in production today, experimenting with shapes and colors in the fields of metals, wood, marble, stone, ceramics, porcelain and handcrafted fabrics. Cultural Event: Podium 16. I Compassi d’Oro di Olivetti

Exhibitions
May 05 2022 -> September 11 2022

Podium 16, curated by Manolo De Giorgi, is a tribute to the 16 Compassi d’Oro that were awarded to Olivetti products between 1954 and 2001 and which went hand in hand with the story of Italian design during the company’s period of greatest success. This long series of awards, spread over about fifty years, allows us to take stock of how machines in particular and Italian technical objects in general have always sought a relationship with our domestic universe. Along this journey, the intention and desire is that of interpreting Olivetti’s unique approach to placing design at the service of a corporate image not just in Italy but in the rest of the world. This was done according to a completely unconventional plan in which product design accepted parallel and even different forms of research between them and which since the 1960s has been considered to be “organic” while maintaining “external” collaborations with respect to the company’s organizational systems.
