Fabbrica del Vapore: Sebastião Salgado

After the Genesis project, dedicated to the most remote regions of the planet to witness its majestic beauty, Salgado has embarked on a new series of journeys to capture the incredible richness and variety of the Brazilian Amazon forest and the ways of life of its peoples, settling in their villages for several weeks and photographing different ethnic groups. A project that lasted seven years, during which he photographed the vegetation, the rivers, the mountains and the people who live there.

With over 200 photographs, Amazônia aims to offer total immersion in the Amazon forest, inviting us to reflect on the need to protect it. The exhibition develops around two themes. The first consists of photographs of landscape settings , placed at different heights and presented in different formats, with sections ranging from the Overview of the forest in which the Amazon seen from above is presented to the visitor, to The flying rivers, one of the most extraordinary and at the same time least known feature of the rainforest, namely the large amount of water that rises towards the atmosphere.

The second group of images is dedicated to the various indigenous populations immortalized by Salgado with the photographs collected in spaces that recall the "ocas", typical indigenous dwellings, vividly evoking the small and isolated human settlements in the heart of the jungle. Thanks to Salgado we can thus get to know the Awá-Guajá, who have only 450 members and are considered the most threatened tribe on the planet, or the Yawanawá, who, on the verge of disappearing, have regained control of their lands and the diffusion of their culture , thriving, up to the Korubo, among the tribes with the least external contacts.

The exhibition features a selection of works that reveal the approach commonly adopted by fashion creatives and designers in various fields to creating text, interfaces and textiles. The itinerary shows how the culture of textiles, the design of interfaces, furniture and devices to contain publishing products as well as the relationship between text, image and product has generated lines of research, innovative projects, business insights and reflections straddling art, craft and fashion.

Pirelli HangarBicocca: Gian Maria Tosatti

Exhibitions
February 23 2023 -> July 30 2023

Gian Maria Tosatti’s (Rome, 1980; lives and works in Naples) exhibition consists of two cycles of paintings presented for the first time at Pirelli HangarBicocca, Portraits (2022) and NOw/here (2023). These large-scale works are set up in close relationship with the architecture of Pirelli HangarBicocca, creating moments of interaction and contrasting situations. Portraits comprises four gold and rust paintings on iron panels, assembled and installed on tube and clamp structures. On the other hand, the NOw/here series takes the form of ten large fields of graphite and white charcoal on canvas suspended from the ceiling.

This new body of work condenses several recurring concepts of Gian Maria Tosatti’s research over the past two decades and embodies a dialogue with the Zeitgeist (Spirit of the time), resonating with the feelings, characteristic of the artist’s generation. For Tosatti, the exhibition becomes an opportunity to address aspects of current events as well as the human condition at such a difficult moment in time, in a society poised between catastrophe and evolution. These works are also conceived as “mirrors,” open questions that directly confront the visitor.

Through their material qualities, the paintings reconnect with the very moment when reality reveals itself, as evoked by the exhibition title “NOw/here,” whose elements can be read individually, as “now” and “here,” or sequentially, as in “nowhere.” In “NOw/here” Tosatti seems to confront History, interpreting it not as a chain of events, but as a feeling, while trying to capture the moment to which we belong.

The lighting of the exhibition “Now/here” has been conceived by Pasquale Mari, a renowned light designer and director of photography who works in cinema, theatre and art.

Armani Silos: Guy Bourdin

Exhibitions
February 24 2023 -> August 31 2023

An exhibition dedicated to Guy Bourdin, that delves into the photographer’s singular lens and the striking impact of his vision as a storyteller, whose goal was not to shock, but rather to urge viewers to engage with the images and be intrigued, to question and to play.

The idea behind the exhibition is to pay tribute to the work of French photographer Guy Bourdin by portraying his compositional and narrative intent, delving beyond the provocation that has always been associated with his work. In the vein of filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock and artist Edward Hopper, whom he greatly admired, Bourdin was essentially a storyteller, capable of condensing entire novels, usually crime or noir, into a single shot.

Palazzo Reale: Bill Viola
Exhibitions
February 24 2023 -> June 25 2023
*
Promoted by the Municipality of Milan-Culture, the Bill Viola exhibition is produced and organized by Palazzo Reale and Arthemisia, with the collaboration of Bill Viola Studio. A survey of works from Viola’s entire artistic career, it offers the public fifteen masterpieces in the halls at Palazzo Reale.

The Milan exhibition offers visitors a path on which they find themselves contemplating the profound issues that Bill explores with slow-motion images in which light, colour, and sound can create moments of deep reverence. Emotions, meditation, and passions can emerge from his videos, taking the viewer on an inner journey.

Thoughtfully curated by Kira Perov, the artist’s wife and executive director of Bill Viola Studio, forty years of work are displayed through a careful selection of pieces, defining a unique event giving us the opportunity to reflect upon life, to set out on our own inner journey, and to immerse ourselves in an alternative world entirely different from the one we left behind at the entrance.

Mudec: Dalí, Magritte, Man Ray and Surrealism

Exhibitions
March 22 2023 -> July 30 2023

180 works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, documents, and artifacts, all from the collection of one of the leading museums in the Netherlands, and their dialogue with some masterpieces from the Permanent Collection. The exhibition is curated by art historian Els Hoek, a curator of the museum, with the collaboration of Alessandro Nigro, professor of History of Art and Art Criticism at the University of Florence, who was assigned the specific task of focusing on the complex, yet refined relationship between Surrealism and non-Western cultures.

This reminds us once again that the venue of a Museum of Cultures such as Mudec lends itself perfectly, as a genius loci, to the development of the artistic dialogues between different cultures. And this exhibition is, indeed, the outcome of a research project regarding a very stimulating artistic ‘syncretism’ that characterized the 1920s and 1930s, in Europe but also elsewhere.

Besides this focus, the exhibition explores the fundamental themes of Surrealist research: dreams and reality, the psyche, love and desire, a new type of beauty. Through the works of lesser-known Surrealists, publications, and historical documents, the exhibition provides visitors with a 360-degree view of the Surrealist universe.

Fondazione Prada: Cere Anatomiche

Exhibitions
March 24 2023 -> July 17 2023

“Cere anatomiche” (Anatomical waxes) is an exhibition conceived in collaboration with La Specola, which is part of the Museum of Natural History and Museum System of the University of Florence, and the Canadian film director and screenwriter David Cronenberg.

The exhibition is the latest iteration of a research project with which Fondazione Prada reveals collections of great value from ‘guest museums’, offering unexpected interpretations and visions of cultural heritage by including a historical collection in a contemporary cultural context.

This project develops in two complementary parts. An exhibition features a selection of thirteen eighteenth-century ceroplastic works from the renowned collection of the Florentine museum, and a series of seventy-two exhibition copies of anatomical drawings gathered in nine vitrines. In particular, “Cere anatomiche” features four reclining female figures, including one of the most relevant works of La Specola’s collection, the so-called Venus, a rare model with detachable parts famous for its beauty.

Mudec: Muholi

Exhibitions
March 31 2023 -> July 30 2023

The special selection of more than 60 black-and-white self-portraits, especially chosen for Mudec convey indelible messages.
The camera thus became for Muholi a weapon of denunciation and an instrument for salvation at the same time. The beauty of the compositions and their absolute talent as artists are for Muholi only a means of affirming the need to exist, the dignity and respect to which every human being is entitled, regardless of their choice of partner or skin colour, and the gender with which they identify. Their art tirelessly investigates topics such as racism, Eurocentrism, feminism, and sexual politics. Magnetic shots of social denunciation ranging from the very first self-portraits to the most recent works from Muholi’s constantly evolving a artistic project.

Muholi choose the setting and the light with meticulous and constant care each time, prepare the subject for the shot in a rigorous and obsessive manner, working on black and white colour contrasts, laying their body bare.
And, finally, the 'context' of the self-portraits: Muholi’s self-portraits are a “performance on stage”, involving a surreal and metaphorical use of simple everyday objects. Headdresses made of money, necklaces made of light cables, clothes pegs worn on the head and crowns made of tyres, pliers, and various cords interpreted as turbans and scarves: these objects are always used and worn on their body in strikingly beautiful poses that often recall - at first superficial glance - the fashion style of certain glossy fashion covers.

ADI: Italy, A New Collective Landscape
See on Map
Exhibitions
April 04 2023 -> September 10 2023
*
The problems facing us during this particular global moment, together with continuous ecological and social transformations, constitute the starting point of the works created by the young Italian designers presented in Italy: A New Collective Landscape. Produced by ADI Design Museum, the exhibition is curated by Angela Rui with Elisabetta Donati de Conti and Matilde Losi, with graphic design by Alice Zani and Paola Bombelli and set-up by the Parasite 2.0 studio. At the MoMA, in New York in 1972, the Italy: The New Domestic Landscape exhibition, curated by Emilio Ambasz, presented the thoughts and ideas of a community of young designers, as the cultural manifestation of a counter-reform that questioned lifestyles and production.

Today, designers act with environmental responsibility and radical freedom, which translate into imagining how the dynamics of transforming external reality can have an impact on living, which can then be extended to urban and non-urban spaces, social relationships and symbiotic alliances, and new forms of behaviour. The standard bearers of the ADI Design Museum exhibition are the under 35 young designers, whose works were selected through an open call in which more than three hundred took part.

The decision to give space to designers of this generation is in line with the need to provide their work with development opportunities, highlight their quality to the business world and present an overall vision of the multifaceted practices of contemporary designers. These practices arise from a general condition of mutual vulnerability between man and the environment. As such, Italy: A New Collective Landscape is intended to be an exhibition-program that focuses on the projects, products and new practices of designers, who are committed to meeting the challenges posed by the current emergency situation, starting with the climate crisis and the repercussions that this has on reality itself.

Pirelli HangarBicocca: Ann Veronica Janssens
See on Map
Exhibitions
April 06 2023 -> July 30 2023
*
Since the late 1970s, Ann Veronica Janssens (Folkestone, UK, 1956; lives and works in Brussels) has developed her research around light and its relationship to what surrounds it, often creating site-specific works that challenge the immutable nature of sculpture and installation. Janssens has built her practice on overcoming the art object through its dematerialization and deconstruction. Through minimal forms and gestures that have an anti-monumental quality, Janssens is actually able to change the public’s perception of space. With their use of light, color, mirrors, air or artificial fog, the works of Janssens call for the direct participation of viewers, inviting them to experience reality differently, to develop an awareness of their senses, of the architecture and spatial-temporal categories by which we define it, emphasizing its sociopolitical and cultural aspects. Often based on experiments carried out in collaboration with scientists, the artist’s works become labs for testing the boundaries between properties and physical-material elements that are regarded as opposites, such as light and darkness, sound and silence, emptiness and presence, the tangible and the incorporeal.

“Grand Bal” explores the career of Ann Veronica Janssens as well as different aspects of her practice. Presenting the most comprehensive selection of her works to date, it includes both historical projects and new productions designed to interact with the space of the Navate within Pirelli HangarBicocca and the outdoor area, expanding its boundaries. The resulting alterations fit dynamically within the exhibition plan, conceived by the artist as a visual and sound choreography that centers not so much on objects as on visitors: they are called upon to move and participate directly, following the train of sensations and perceptions generated while experiencing the works.

Palazzo Reale: Leandro Erlich
Exhibitions
April 22 2023 -> October 04 2023
*
Promoted by the Municipality of Milan-Culture, the exhibition is produced and organized by Palazzo Reale and Arthemisia in collaboration with Studio Erlich, and is curated by Francesco Stocchi.

An Argentine artist born in Buenos Aires in 1973, Erlich creates large installations with which the public relates and interacts, becoming the artwork itself. His unique works represent something absolutely new in the art world, bringing together creativity, vision, emotion, and fun.

Buildings on which one appears to climb, houses uprooted and suspended in mid-air, lifts going nowhere, escalators tangled like threads in a ball of yarn, disorienting and surreal sculptures, and videos that subvert normality. These are all elements recounting something ordinary in an extraordinary context, in which everything is different from what it seems, and where we lose our sense of reality and perception of space.

Erlich’s works are the result of a profound and conceptual artistic exploration that flows into paradox and has already won over millions of visitors worldwide: 600,000 in Tokyo and 300,000 in Buenos Aires. Everywhere, the public has thronged to his exhibitions which are characterized by site-specific installations that are highly complex to make, and therefore quite rare.
