To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the house of Yves Saint Laurent, the late couturier’s creations will be exhibited at six leading Paris museums, from January 29 to May 15, 2022. The art world pays homage to the French fashion designer.
Saint Laurent, who died in 2008 aged 71, was 26 when he founded his haute couture house with the business-partner and lover Pierre Bergé. The designer presented his inaugural haute couture show on 29 January 1962 in Paris.

The six museums taking part in the exhibition Yves Saint Laurent Aux Musées are the Centre Pompidou, the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, the Musée du Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Musée Picasso and the Musée Yves Saint Laurent. The exhibition Yves Saint Laurent aux musées will delve into the profound inspirational bond the couturier had with art in general, and the collections of French public museums in particular. Conceived and made possible by the Fondation Pierre Bergé the exhibition will foster a dialogue between a selection of garments, including some of the couturier’s most iconic designs, and the permanent collections of six iconic Parisian museums.

Each museum will present different aspects of Saint Laurent’s works. Important archive materials from the fashion house will be presented at the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris. They will help understand how couture garments come to be, and illustrate the daily work developed within the couture house, provide insight into Saint Laurent’s creative process and pay tribute to his numerous invaluable collaborators. The Louvre will show the fascination of the couturier for gold and crystals, while at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, Saint Laurent designs will recall the colours of the artists Pierre Bonnard and Raoul Dufy. The Musée d'Orsay will explore his connections with Proust, the Centre Pompidou emphasis the connection between the designer and some of the most important artistic movements of the twentieth century. Musée National Picasso will highlight the influence of Pablo Picasso on his garments.

The exhibition is conceived like an archipelago. It stimulates a new form of dialogue and encourages visitors to chart their own journey from one museum to another, taking them into previously unknown and entirely new dimensions.
