10.03.53 is a brand that offers accessories of extreme purity, where strictly decorative elements are eliminated. Every detail serves a clear function, with form following function. In contrast to mainstream norms, Luca Colosimo, the designer and founder of 10.03.53, pushes the boundaries of leather goods by incorporating unconventional and surprising materials.

To explore the essence of the brand and Luca’s vision, we had the opportunity to interview him.

MdM: How are these atypical and surprising materials translated in your creations?
Luca Colosimo > I first imagined a line of bags with structural elements in reinforced concrete, designed to be ultra-light and unbreakable. Then, I worked with split leather, an untreated material that is free from the heavy chemicals used in industry, restoring its natural flexibility and its ability to develop a patina and evolve over time. I then developed woven designs using upcycled leather, aiming to reuse even the smallest scraps from major fashion houses that were doomed to destruction. More recently, in response to the growing demand for alternatives to animal leather, I created a 100% cellulosic material, from mushrooms, pineapples, apples, etc., free of chemicals, tear-resistant and waterproof. It does not seek to imitate the look of leather but can be worked in the same way.

MdM: Why do you present 10.03.53 as a genderless brand?
Luca Colosimo > I design my bags so that they can be worn by anyone, regardless of gender. This is not about riding a trend but about deconstructing the extremely gendered vision of my childhood, making my pieces adaptable to anyone

MdM: Do you mean that the limitations you faced as a child influnced your creative journey?
Luca Colosimo > To understand the roots of 10.03.53, you have to imagine a family from a small modest town in the south of Italy that moves to the north of the country. It triggers a crazy social pressure: to conform to local custom. the importance of etiquette Above all, do not attract attention, much less cultivate difference. From this frustration will be born my fundamental need to create differently.

MdM: Why leather goods?
As a child, I developed a fascination for bags, an object that was strictly forbidden to me. My father kept telling me that Luca Colosimo > in Italy, the only accessory allowed for a man is his watch. The object that was forbidden to me ended up embodying the sexuality that was denied to me, becoming a symbol of liberation, both armor and amulet.

MdM: What is your background in fashion?
Luca Colosimo > I studied industrial pattern-making. I realized that leather goods offered me a sculptural, architectural approach to design, where I could explore shapes without being constrained by human morphology, unlike ready-to-wear. That’s when I decided to make it my profession. That led me to the design studio at Gucci in Rome, then to Paris at Paco Rabanne, Isabel Marant, and many others.

MdM: What is 10.03.53?
Luca Colosimo > With 10.03.53, I seek to offer leather goods that challenge market conventions, in a way, a response to an industry in which I no longer see myself. It is much more than a brand; it is a personal approach, a way of deconstructing norms. My approach is based on breaking away from ostentation and pure decoration, exploring unexpected materials, and working with time and the transformation of objects. Each bag carries within it an idea, a statement, and embodies this desire for emancipation that lies at the heart of my brand.
