Exposition Générale unveils the artistic identity of the Fondation Cartier and its heritage through nearly 600 works by over 100 artists featured in its programming from 1984 to the present. Reflecting the institution’s history and its openness to the diversity of the world, the Fondation Cartier Collection bears witness to four decades of international contemporary creation. The exhibition highlights the singularity of this unique collection, shaped over time through the Fondation’s programming. It comprises solo exhibitions and thematic groupings around which the Fondation’s artistic commitments, architecture, living worlds, technology, and science, unfold, presenting emblematic works alongside fragments of landmark exhibitions that have defined the institution’s history.
The title Exposition Générale is borrowed from the general exhibitions of objects and clothing once held at the Grands Magasins du Louvre. Contemporary with the World’s Fairs, whose first Parisian edition in 1855 coincided with the building’s construction during Baron Haussmann’s initial works, these “Expositions Générales” were sites of sociability and discovery, offering new perspectives on material culture. The Fondation Cartier building embodies the advent of modernity in Paris and enters into dialogue with its Collection. By presenting the works in the spirit of openness that characterized these historic exhibitions, the Fondation conceives Exposition Générale as a public space for experimentation and sharing at the heart of the city.
