The Moment the Snow Melts is a site-specific installation by Chiharu Shiota (Osaka, 1972), presented at MUDEC in November as a preview of the upcoming exhibition The Sense of Snow (February 2026).
Transforming the Agora space into an ethereal landscape, thousands of threads descend from the ceiling, interwoven with notes and fragments of paper inscribed with the names of people once present in our lives but no longer within reach. From September, visitors will be invited to contribute their own reflections or drawings, either on site or digitally, to become part of the work.
Shiota’s suspended snowfall offers a place for meditation, evoking what she describes as “the final moments of something coming to an end; the last echo.” Snow becomes a metaphor for human relationships – their fragile beginnings and inevitable fading – while the written names affirm that loss does not erase memory, and that, with time, renewal always follows.
