The first exhibition of the french artist at the NextLevel Galerie. José Lévy presents its latest works, for which he was Laureate of the Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto, Japan 2011.

Upon embarking for his artistic residence in Japan, José Lévy was unwittingly following in the footsteps of Claude Lévi-Strauss. Experiencing ‘the other’; exploring both the unknown and one’s self. following the steps of Judogi, a company founded in the 1960s by Lévy’s grandfather Anatole and specialized in the manufacture of martial arts equipment...

...This family legacy is at the origins of the project developed during Lévy’s residence at the Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto. A sensitive, personal expression in dialogue with the spirit of the still-present grandfather, it explores a Euro-centric fantasy of otherness...

To mark the occasion of the exhibition opening, José Lévy invites composer Yves Chauris, who he met during their residency at Villa Kujoyama, to share their "experience of Japan" performed by the string quartet, "Tana", who will become a Japanese chorus of cicadas for the occasion.
