The Biennial of Design (known also by its Slovene acronym BIO) is one of the few major international design exhibitions that has a tradition of more than forty-eight years of presenting contemporary trends in international design. From the first biennial in 1964 to today, BIO has presented twenty-two exhibitions surveying the state of international design.

The main exhibition of 23rd Biennial of Design has been conceived by the renowned curators Margo Konings and Margriet Vollenberg (Organisation in Design). The selection of works from 27 countries shows how modern technologies, digitalisation and globalisation, as well as nature and its resources influence designers and their creative work. However the exhibition does not only expose the new and up-to-date ideas of contemporary design production, but also opens up a daring and critical cross section of everything that contemporary design reflects and describes in this very moment.

The BIO 23 exhibition display was designed by the well-known Dutch designer Joost van Bleiswijk.

he first Designers’ Saturday took place in Langenthal in 1987. Since then there have been 13 of these biennial occasions, to provide support for the Swiss design scene whilst giving it a publicity platform and stimulating its further development.

Designers’ Saturday happens at a place where design is actually created. Designers’ Saturday is not just a product show held on characterless trade fair premises. Instead it is a stage where authentic design skills are put on view at the atmospheric production sites of the companies involved.

The event is an international meeting point for the design world. The presentations of numerous internationally known firms will be accompanied by the Cartes Blanches of both national and international colleges of art and design.

The three-day event, this year themed “Making a Difference”, will take place at the Shanghai Exhibition Center.

100% Design Shanghai and IHDD 2012 (International Home Décor & Design is China’s unique trade and sourcing platform for high-quality premium luxury home accessories and furnishings) confirm Shanghai D-Week Collaboration.

Supporting by Shanghai D-Week, the organizers have assured that not only will there be a significant level of local content on show at 100% Design Shanghai 2012, but also that the exhibits will be of the highest caliber the country has to offer.

Yan Mi, a member of the 100% Design Shanghai / IHDD 2012 panel, said, “Compared with five years ago, demand for original Chinese décor and design has seen a significant rise, thanks in large part to information globalization. It’s the
protection of IPR and the mechanism for designers and brands to cooperate that still lag behind. This explains the undervaluing of Chinese design. Having said that, the overall development trend is very positive.”
Ms. Yan added, “Over the last two years we’ve seen an increasing awareness of the “Designed-in-China” brand and of representing Chinese culture on the international stage. However, when compared to what happens in the international design community, the ability of local Chinese designers to set trends, and the functionality of local designs, are still below par. To raise their level of influence, Chinese designers must produce works of consistent quality and style. They must also remain sensitive to market trends and demand.”

Operae is a trade exhibition dedicated to self-made design which is annually held in Turin. Design studios, designers, handicraft designers, makers, digital designers and, starting from 2012 edition, graphic designer take part in this event: many heterogeneous personalities that allow people to discover and appreciate the liveliness of this design dimension where crafts and design process blend together. During the exhibition a series of events are organized to deepen the dynamics of self-production, themes related to it and the different directions it could take in the future.

It offers a new point of view on design, offering opportunities for meetings, business, analysis and comparison on theme of creativity and self-production.

During Operae products made in small series and limited editions can be displayed and purchased: items resulting from the creativity and work of design professionals who directly manage their entire production chain (from the idea to its realization, communication and distribution). Operae is also a place where to learn more about other European countries and Design Schools’ self made design.
