Veteran Japanese designer received the Legion of Honor during the opening ceremony of the exhibition “Work of Issey Miyake” at Tokyo's National Art Centre.

This retrospective shows 45 years of the work's trajectory of designer, who became known by his concept of clothing made up from “a piece of cloth”. Miyake has always explored the relationship between fashion and design, clothing and the body, innovation and comfort.

Jack Lang, former French minister of culture gave Miyake the medal and named him "the architect of design”. “Millenary and futurist, his work surprises and touches. It’s a sculpture and a movement at the same time,” Lang said.

Legion of Honor is the highest decoration in France. Miyake bestowed the rank of commander of the Legion of Honor and became one of the few Japanese, including director Akira Kurosawa and writer Kenzaburo Oe, to award this order.
