Doppia Firma is a project by the Michelangelo Foundation and Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d’Arte, in collaboration with Living, that promotes the union between design innovation and traditional craftsmanship.

The 2023 edition of Doppia Firma focuses on the theme of playfulness, encouraging designers and master artisans to create works that express their vision through humor, irony, allusion, and more. The resulting objects are showcased at Palazzo Litta in Milan and made using materials such as ceramics, metal, mirror, wood, and paper. The exhibition coincides with the Salone del Mobile 2023, during which is set up a site-specific work by Milanese master Gianluca Pacchioni.

BARONA DISTRICT – Labò
See on Map
April 17 2023 -> April 20 2023
*
Labò is the new cultural project promoted by the Rodolfo Ferrari Foundation within the Spa - Società Prodotti Antibiotici.
In synergy with the essence of the place, called to research in the medical field since its foundation in 1947, Labò is a laboratory that expresses itself in its true essence: an experimentation process that starts from an idea or a concept to become a product or an artwork.
The workshop is the distinctive theme of the project: the physical space in which visitors will be welcomed along the exhibition path, and the intangible space of a creative investigation that materialises in the design editions presented.
Labò was born from the will of Alisée Matta, president of Spa and of the Rodolfo Ferrari Foundation, with the aim of making expressions of science, culture and art coexist in the same historic industrial building.

Labò becomes a moment to exchange ideas, to reflect and promote research in the field of creativity, a choral event in which art, design and experimentation come together to show unprecedented results.

Continuing its dialogue with the city of Milan, Giorgio Armani opens the doors of Palazzo Orsini, the company's historic headquarters, to the public for the first time at the Salone del Mobile to present the new Armani/Casa collection.
On this occasion, guests will have the opportunity to discover, in the secret garden, the new outdoor collection and, continuing along the path inside the historic building, some precious furniture displayed in the prestigious frescoed rooms on the first floor.
The atelier of the Giorgio Armani Privé haute couture collection thus gives way, in part, to the Armani/Casa design, in the sign of the continuity of a style that is as consistent in fashion as in furnishings, because the attention to materials, the artisan care in making them, the sense of a light, refined and therefore recognisable preciousness is identical.

gloTM together with Agostino Iacurci presents "Dry Days, Tropical Nights." A large installation in Largo Treves that invites the viewer to look at how our landscape could become and to build a better tomorrow all together.

Iacurci's intervention takes off from the exterior façade of the imposing Largo Treves tower to its raw interior with bright colors, palm tree silhouettes and lights reminiscent of tropical sunsets. Inspiring Augustine were two climatologists who envisioned what the peninsula might look like under current management of the Planet. What might await us are nothing but desert and tropical landscapes. Hence the work's name, borrowed from two environmental indicators that report the severity of heat.

During the week it's possible to enter for the first time the iconic palace designed by Arrighetti to live an unforgettable experience and participate in a series of activities and meetings that will amplify its immersive character.

BRERA DESIGN DISTRICT – Hermès
See on Map
April 17 2023 -> April 23 2023
*
Beauty is manifold. It manifests itself in the simplest forms as well as in the most sophisticated. The Hermès creations for the home draw their aesthetic from a form of archaism, natural vigour and purity. The set design itself seems to have eliminated all excess to show a graphic framework of iron rods and concrete. Through an interplay of textures and lines that create the void, the structure becomes radical and powerful. In the furniture presented, an armchair combining leather and wood, a chair from the 1930s revisited, a sofa with a timeless silhouette, it is also through subtraction that strength shines through, that evidence is produced.
The savoir-faire crystallises around exceptional elements: glass-blowing for the minimalist lamps, traditional upholstery for the simple and refined chair, or virtuoso hand embroidery for the carpets with graphic motifs. Organic matter is sought with the use of bronze, glass, wood and leather, enhanced in their primary aspect or put in dialogue with each other. Soft colours are a pretext for the expression of motifs that pay homage to the heritage of the house. Equestrian patterns are thus found in a cheerful porcelain breakfast service or come to life on rugs and plaids.
The essential design draws inspiration from materials, accompanied by expert craftsmanship, to create objects of today that become more beautiful with the years and stand the test of time.

The brands debuts the “Ritratti”, a new multifaceted project, combining art, fashion and design.

Always inspired by figurative and abstract art, the brand’s founder and creative director Carolina Castiglioni selected a range of prints previously used on a range of Plan C items that served as starting points to create a selection of sculptures.

The protagonists of the sculptures are Carolina herself, her children Margherita and Filippo, as well as one of their friends. They all already appeared on Plan C’s prints, that Carolina creates starting from pictures she personally takes during her spare time.

The colorful, eye-catching resin sculptures, that immediately link to the distinctive esthetic of the effortless chic luxury brand, are handmade by skilled artisans in Milan starting from white chalk and polymeric clay artifacts that are used to create silicone rubber molds. These are filled with resin, that is then sleekened and hand painted.

In addition, Carolina also recreated some elements of the sculptures as intarsia on mohair sweaters and as sequined embroiders on pencil skirts coming with four different color combinations matching with the artistic objects.

At the same time, the graphic elements also appear on four different carpets developed under license by French homeware brand, that worked with artisans in Morocco to craft these exquisite wool creations available upon request.

The work thus envelops us like a canvas in which the relationships between effects are dynamically woven, inviting us to rely on a holistic and perceptive understanding of the experience of co-defining space.

CASSINA X ONE BLOCK DOWN

One Block Down and Cassina have once again joined to develop a unique interpretation of the iconic Leggera chair, originally designed by Gio Ponti in 1951 for Cassina.

This partnership brings together two industry leaders to showcase the beauty of contemporary craftsmanship and industrialization while celebrating an icon of Italian design innovated thanks to Cassina's experimental research and One Block Down's disruptive and creative approach. This limited edition of the Leggera replaces the chair’s traditional wooden structure with hydroformed stainless steel that is left raw with visible welding to highlight its essential form and materials. The result is a new contemporary version of ‘the right chair’ par excellence.

To honour the collaboration, One Block Down has developed a disruptive installation on the sixth floor of the car park of Rinascente in Milan. The 30 pieces of the limited edition will be available online at oneblockdown.it from May 3 at 9 am CET.

Design Variations 2023 presents the exhibition "Reforming Future" at Istituto Marchiondi Spagliardi, which opens for the first time to the audience of Milan design week.

The Istituto Marchiondi Spagliardi, built in the 1950s in Baggio and long used as a juvenile reform school, is a rare example of Italian Brutalist architecture designed by the architect Vittoriano Viganò. With this event the building, that was closed in the 1970s and soon fell into a state of abandonment, will once again be accessible to the international architecture and design public thanks to the collaboration between MoscaPartners and Milan City Coucil. The event consists in guided tours of the Istituto Marchiondi’s architectural structure, organized in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano and the GAe Engineering company. Reforming Future, strongly desired by Valerio Castelli, is now a part of Design Variations 2023 and showcases the projects created during the master’s course led by Michele De Lucchi and Andrea Branzi at the Politecnico di Milano School of Design. The exhibition focuses on the explorative nature of the course led by the two architects in collaboration with Francesca Balena Arista, Marco De Santi, and Mario Greco,

The 2023 edition of Prada Frames Milano is dedicated to the theme "Materials in Flux". Prada thus chooses to promote a reflection whose ethical and aesthetic implications, from the unprecedented creative potential to the low-impact production perspectives opened up by the use of innovative recycled materials, have long been central to its research.
The symposium's work is based on the studies of the British anthropologist Tim Ingold, for whom matter is a living, interconnected and ever-changing entity, and aims to explore the concept of waste, delve into the dynamics governing waste infrastructures and their valorisation systems, and analyse the complex relationship between matter and ecosystems.

Around these topics, a rich programme of encounters: six sessions over three days, from 17 to 19 April, will bring together scholars and professionals from different fields of research, such as, among others, Tim Ingold, Elizabeth Povinelli, Beatriz Colomina, Mark Wigley, Sophie Chao, Veena Sahajwalla and Hans Ulrich Obrist.

SANLORENZO – La Macchina Impossibile

April 17 2023 -> April 23 2023

As part of the exhibition-event Interni Design Re-Evolution at the University of Milan, Sanlorenzo presents La Macchina Impossibile (The Impossible Machine), an installation by Piero Lissoni that interprets the shipyard's incessant research into technologically innovative solutions to reduce the environmental impact of yachting.

The Impossible Machine is an imposing metal sculpture: a complex machine, highly technological but defined in detail by skilful manual work just like a yacht. Positioned in the centre of the 18th century courtyard, the entire structure rests on a backlit platform that enhances a mechanism made of propellers and notched wheels.

These move thanks to the new hydrogen system, which Sanlorenzo is developing for the propulsion of its yachts in collaboration with Siemens Energy, based on the use of combined green methanol reformer/fuel cell modules. This technology will be used to power the hotellerie functions on yachts between 24 and 73 metres in length, starting in 2024 on the new 50Steel.

The installation is immersed in a light water vapour, the only emission, with zero environmental impact, released by the turbine driven by the fuel cell system.

An immersive, technological space designed for everyone to experience the power of sharing and the opportunity to become networked.

4 technological elements in the space, 4 symbolic charging stations meet participants to connect them to the 4 pillars of Plenitude + Be Charge: sustainability, innovation, future and mobility.

Interacting individually with the elements, generative art creates a visual mood in which to see energy flow and a sonic connection to the environment through different soundscapes created for each element. Driving change means becoming a network and sharing a common vision and direction. The installation shows a change in the immersive environment visually and sonically only when participants decide to interact with all elements simultaneously.

Technology is the tool to create connections and synergy between people, community and environment by following its mission: to be the best ally in the challenge of energy transition.

The exhibition celebrates the brand’s irreverent and rebellious 30 years of career, while illustrating its contemporary and newfound mainstream component. Since its debut in Milan in 1993, Droog has established itself as something other, rough with fascinating storytelling. Rebelling against the idea of form and function, it gave life to a new aesthetic, approach, and language, articulating the thoughts of an audience and industry that were bored with refinement and decoration.

An immersive and welcoming display, it showcases how the brand’s impertinent thinking and pioneering disobedience from traditional design has become during the years—to say, extremely appealing and a real milestone of the international history of design. From Tejo Remi’s Chest of Drawers, designed in 1991, elevating found drawers into what could be perceived as an art object, to Marijn van der Poll’s Do Hit Chair, which as in a performance, is shaped by its owner with a hammer making the object unique and also very much yours; from the embracing and artisanal-looking Knotted chair by Marcel Wanders, designed in 1996, to the more recent objects such as the 2013 Glass Lantern by Richard Hutten, who modernised and reshaped a typical Chinese paper lantern, Droog aims at making the ordinary extraordinary.
