ISOLA DESIGN DISTRICT – The New Paradigma
See on Map
June 07 2022 -> June 12 2022 11h - 20h

Paradigm: A pattern or model, an exemplar; a typical instance of something, an example.

It’s time to accept “The New Paradigma” as our currently accepted paradigm is not working anymore. The system is constantly preparing for its doom. Mass-production, continuous consumption, short lifecycles of products bring this end faster…The way we design, project and produce have to change and we can only do it by working “Together As One”.

In an industrial heritage in via Confalonieri 21, collectible design pieces will blend into colours through live know-how performances and exhibitions. Six selected designers will exhibit, build and perform their designs.
The exhibition includes works of Jonathan Bocca, Annalisa Iacopetti, Sarah Roseman, Studio Neue, Pepijn Fabius Clovis, and Tom Jacobs.

Driade is "On Stage" in the Triennale Milano at the theater, the perfect place to host an operation of contamination between the world of design, entertainment and art. Driade is an aesthetic laboratory in the continuous search for beauty beyond the boundaries of architecture and design which, from the very beginning, is based on a dialogue between different languages, united by the constant search for the highest aesthetic values.

The designer Marcelo Burlon, the trapper Sfera Ebbasta, the artist Omar Hassan and the gamer and content creator Pow3r, led by the artistic direction of the brand, the architect Fabio Novembre, are the authors of 4 unpublished projects by Driade:

For Driade, Marcelo Burlon designs Edaird, a mirror with a tribal flavor between Argentine earth and sky.

Sfera Ebbasta personalizes Cocky, an over-the-top chaise longue that can only fly high.

Omar Hassan designs the PiùDiUno tapestry, the perfect synthesis between research and action as a tribute to street art.

Pow3r designs the Arcad3 pouf, the celebration of gaming, its evolution from arcades to the home environment.

The immense spaces of the former Pelota return to serve as the setting for the presentation of the new home collection signed by Hermès, in this setting that is always awe-inspiring. The artistic direction is by Charlotte Macaux-Perelman and Alexis Fabry, and the setting each year amazes with its simplicity and at the same time its power: this time everything is designed under the banner of lightness, like a challenge to gravity, which is expressed through the presentation of home objects presented inside four structures. Each object is an expression of savoir-faire and the result of extreme precision. Six creations give shape to this manifesto to lightness: they are all made of cashmere, one of the maison's favorite materials, an infinitely delicate natural fiber that combines strength and brilliant colors. The workmanship is made with strips of cashmere that form the pattern; hand-woven and hand-dyed squares create patchworks of shimmering colors; geometric shapes assembled with relinking evoke stained glass mosaics; a large bedspread brings color, patchwork and the quilting tradition into dialogue. Then there are objects, porcelain and furniture that assert their singularity: a sheet of leather cut, folded and hand-painted becomes a centerpiece; porcelain plates reflect sunlight; bamboo lends delicacy and strength to a seat. The lightness of lines generates a timeless style.

Casa Baglioni, the new hotel in the Baglioni Collection set to open in Milan’s Brera district this year to a design by architects Spagnulo & Partners, offers a look behind the scenes during Milan Design Week, as it becomes the stage for the art exhibition In-Between. Where Art meets Design.

Spagnulo&Partners have created a show to explore the subtle relationship between art and design that underpins the concept for the new Casa Baglioni. It features works by four great international artists, Enrico Castellani, Agostino Bonalumi, Anne Imhof and Giulio Paolini, from the Stefano Cecchi Trust Collection, created by entrepreneur Stefano Cecchi and curated by Iole Pellion di Persano.

The exhibition endorses the idea of a dialogue between interior design and works of art as a means of discovering new visual languages. It is a process that leads to a vision of an integrated space where art, design and architecture interweave to create a world of original expressive possibilities.

Matter by Norwegian Presence is a celebration of materiality and ingenuity featuring some of the most exciting designers and progressive manufacturers working in Norway today.

Held in the setting of Galleria Milano and curated by Kråkvik & D’Orazio, Matter by Norwegian Presence brings together products from leading design talents and the country’s most respected manufacturers. The exhibition showcases and celebrates the material honesty, sustainable practices, solution-oriented thinking, and nature-inspired aesthetic that define Norwegian design today.

Examining Norway’s access and approach to natural resources, Matter by Norwegian Presence features a Material Lab – a special exhibit that chronicles the transition from raw material to finished product, demonstrating how a material’s inherent natural visual and textural characteristics are expressed in the final design.

Diverse in inspiration, approach, and output, the featured designers are all, in one way or another, exploring new materials for the good of the planet. For some, that means finding new applications for Norway’s natural materials such as wood, wool, stone and aluminum; for others, it means tapping into waste streams to create new products from what would otherwise be discarded.

“Between Space and Time". The theme of Fuorisalone 2022 focuses on these two concepts and their possible expressions. Stark grasps this opportunity to investigate the time-space/environment relationship by means of a visual and experiential installation. That is how it take shape “Momentum”, a Stark installation that embodies two visions of time, scientific time and the human lifetime, time as we experience it.

In the last two years, perceptions of space and time have changed drastically, and our experience of our present, past and future has expanded and become confused, with a gradual loss of clear points of reference, leading to greater uncertainty. This new lack of clarity in our daily lives is accompanied by changes to the environment and climate. These are often played down and overlooked because they are viewed as slower and more gradual than the actual speed and unpredictability with which these changes are taking place. As they immerse themselves in the work, people participate in a shared experience constructed with light and sound, which reveals the relationship between absolute time, which proceeds inexorably, and perceived time, which we have the power to modify.

The work thus invites us to reflect on our actions, and how they interact and interfere with space to transform it: creation is still possible, in spite of the inexorable march of time.

Tai Ping presents for the first time in its Milanese showroom, Floræ Folium, a set designed by Sam Baron. The French designer has created a unique installation introducing three original rugs, each celebrating the true technical capabilities of Tai Ping, resulting in a dramatic design solution that takes creativity to the next level.

Sam Baron revisited the very roots of his craft as a source of inspiration. Paper and pencil, graphite, chalks, brushes, and colours were used to create whimsical compositions in which our eye is invited to wander. Colour washes, strokes, and fades emerged during the creative process, from which the subtleties offered by aquarelle and drawing bore three distinct pieces: Regalis, Borealis and Anamorphosis.

Says Remi Versteeg, co-founder of Amsterdam architects Beyond Space: “With the Certosa Initiative, we’re adding a spectacular newcomer to the Milan Design Week line-up. It’s precisely what designers need right now. We never stopped making, but for too long, we were unable to show; to an audience, yes, but also to each other. We need to mix and mingle, thrive of that mutual exposure to fresh ideas.”

"Design Variations" creates a collective exhibition featuring projects both from Italy and around the world. The exhibition becomes a path connecting Design and Project Culture to the city's social and architectural heritage.

A plurality of projects triggers a profound exchange between exhibitions, place identity, art, ingenuity, creativity, and design innovation. All of this takes place within two palaces: the Circolo Filologico Milanese (at via Clerici 10), which is the oldest association in the city, founded to spread culture and the study of foreign languages and civilizations; and the Palazzo Visconti (at via Cino del Duca 8), one of the most elaborate examples of Milanese rococo, characterized by richly decorated rooms and magnificent frescoes.

The exhibition at Palazzo Visconti is enriched by the collaboration with designer Mario Trimarchi, the presence of companies such as Poltronova, LcD textile, Woak, and the participation of the School of Design of the Politecnico di Milano.

The exhibition at Circolo Filologico Milanese is enriched by collaborations with Olimpia Zagnoli, a world-renowned artist who will present a site-specific work. Olimpia Zagnoli will interpret the facades of the two buildings with the collaboration of the 3M Architectural Finishes team who will supply and install the finishes for the surfaces.

During the Fuorisalone 2022, IED will present at Base Milano the Absolute Beginners an original, collective project, born from the dialogue between one hundred and fifty students coming from all twelve sites of the IED Group in Italy, Spain and Brazil and ten female figures expressing visionary thinking. The installation is the result of a multidisciplinary and transversal project that brought together students from different courses to give voice to a dialogue between young designers, today’s absolute beginners, and ten women, real absolute beginners.

The ten Absolute Beginners – Lina Bo Bardi, Eva Mameli Calvino, Ada Bursi, Rei Kawakubo, Cinzia Ruggeri, Laura Solera Mantegazza with Maria Montessori and Giuseppina Pizzigoni, Gala Eluard Dalì, Bélen Moneo, Carla Accardi, and Patricia Urquiola – were chosen by the working groups to be interpreted precisely because with their work, their creative genius and also their gender struggle they have left a personal but indelible mark on history. The exhibition is an interdisciplinary and interactive space, which will be shaped by suggestions and develop from the connections between the projects, sometimes crossing one another, occasionally separating, at times shattering and in some cases reforming both in digital and analogue modes. The design will play with light, sound, projections, materials and colours.

Absolute Beginners is the work of Rossella Bertolazzi and Davide Sgalippa, Visual Arts Directors at IED Milan.

Triennale Milano and Memphis Milano present Memphis Again, an exhibition directed and curated by Christoph Radl.

The exhibition presents more than two-hundred pieces of furniture and objects (bookshelves, dividers, vetrines, toilette furniture, dining tables, countertop tables, coffee tables, desks, chairs, couches, sofa beds, table lamps, appliques, floor lamps, chandeliers, ashtrays, flower pots, fruit bowls, fabric accessories, rugs) in the most diverse selection of materials (wood, plastic, laminate, glass, ceramic, porcelain, silver, steel, fabric) produced between 1981 and 1986 for the Memphis collection.

The objects will be displayed in chronological order, just like a fashion show in which the observer will be the one moving along the catwalk in a space that, thanks to the furniture and the music by Seth Troxler, feels like a nightclub. Quotes by critics, architects and designers will be projected on the walls.

Korean craftsmanship creates Italian design and on the occasion of Milan Design Week 2022 presents a preview to the public of the creations born from the "remote" cultural exchange with three great Italian architects and designers: Michele de Lucchi, Mario Trimarchi and Francesco Faccin.

The exhibition tackles the theme of respect for nature, bringing attention to the value of craftsmanship and the use of raw materials that originate from nature itself, in this particular moment of pandemic, climatic and moral crisis.

A total of 100 works on display will be created by Italian designers with Korean artisans (3 works by de Lucchi, 5 by Trimarchi and 3 by Faccin) and by 14 Korean artists, made with metals, fabrics, wood, glass and Hanji (the traditional Korean paper) to show the essence of Korean craftsmanship under the artistic direction of Shin-jae Kang.

SUPERDESIGN SHOW – Urban Matter(s)

Urban Matter(s) - Material Reduction for a Lighter City is the concept as well as the name of the collective exhibition curated by Materially for Milano Design Week, strongly focused on culture of sustainability applied to all business activities.

There are four areas of the exhibition around which virtuous stories will be aggregated: Carbon Revolution - Reduce, stem, break down; Breathing Quality - Protect, filter, purify; Resourceful Waste - Limit, rethink, transform; City Skin - Change, update, dress, refine. Themes, but above all planning and production actions that show the way towards a more human and community-friendly future. Urban Matter(s) certainly intends to open a reflection but also to provide some concrete answers to the issues highlighted, especially through the materials and processes proposed by the selected exhibiting companies, including: Circularity, Conceria Nuvolari, Covestro, FENIX, Geocycle Italia, Haiki+, Holcim Italia, Marcegaglia Digital Print, MM, Organoid, Poliuretano è, SAATIstyle, Saxa Gres, ST Powder Coatings, YKK, Zero Motorcycles, Arrosia, Bioforcetech, Coffeefrom, Gees Recycling, Mixcycling, NaturLoop, Nazena, Rice House, Verabuccia.

The coherence of the project with the theme of circularity and the point of view of reduction as a virtuous action is also expressed, finally, in the use (and post-use) of all the elements of the layout of the exhibition, starting with the choice of materials used for the preparation. All the space dedicated to the exhibition, for example, will be delimited by a particular fabric, the Breath, by the Italian startup Anemotech, which incorporates a technology capable of absorbing, blocking and breaking down the polluting molecules present in the atmosphere. The recycling and reuse of all the objects, furnishings and materials on display is also envisaged, guaranteeing them a second life and avoiding their disposal in landfills.

Mathieu Lehanneur, renowned French designer, presents Inventory of Life, a series of four installations based on the collection of scientific data and statistics documenting the state of the world's population and the consequences of its behaviour on Earth. Touching on topics such as the evolution of the populations of over 150 countries (State of the World), the current state of our planet's waters (50 Seas and How Deep is Time) and the connection between our desire to live and to act (Live/Leave), Lehanneur captures a still image of contemporary society and draws a portrait of humanity through the use of scientific data for aesthetic purposes. The project is in fact based on UN and WHO reports and satellite photos obtained specifically for this exhibition. Events of great social and political significance such as wars and birth rate increases can now be read and analysed through a different lens, offering a tangible image of phenomena seemingly beyond our ability to comprehend, reminding us that the future is instead all in our hands.

Ettore Sottsass. Struttura e colore
Curated by: Marco Sammicheli
Exhibition design and graphics: Christoph Radl
Highlighting various aspects of Ettore Sottsass’s works and ideas, a series of exhibitions and events are being put on around the permanent display of Casa Lana. The first of these shows takes its title from a 1954 article by Sottsass. The paintings, drawings, photographs and objects on display bring out the special attention that this master of architecture and design always paid to the relationship between man, with his needs and rituals, and his habitat.

Casa Lana by Ettore Sottsass
Reinstallation design: Luca Cipelletti
Art direction: Christoph Radl
In collaboration with: Studio Sottsass
The central area of Ettore Sottsass’s Casa Lana has been rebuilt and is on permanent display in the Sala Sottsass: this interior of a private residence, which the great architect and designer created in the mid-1960s in Milan, is now open to all thanks to the donation by Barbara Radice Sottsass. Imagining “a small square where one can move and meet” (Domus, 1967), Sottsass created a protected space for people to chat or listen to music, while the space around it was organized for a variety of activities and functions.

A collection of design objects conceived during the pandemic and made from three sustainable hardwoods from American forests. The question of a change of perspective is integral to both the form and content of the installation: Forest Tales is not just a showcase of creativity, but a manifesto against waste in design, a plea for a more considered choice of materials and a challenge to the status quo. The exhibition, staged by Studio Swine, features works by contemporary designers, both established and emerging, including Thomas Heatherwick, Jaime Hayon, Maria Jeglinska-Adamczewska, Maria Bruun and Mac Collins, in an installation that encourages visitors to explore these sustainable materials and to reflect on the relationship between forests and our everyday objects. Also on display will be four solid wood tables that won the A seat at a table competition, promoted by Ahec and Riva 1920, with the aim of offering emerging Italian design talents a platform to showcase their ideas.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Gilberto Colombo's birth, the idea was born to design a road bike using Colombo's latest innovation in tubing. The result is Fabrice Domercq and Jasper Morrison's creation, which experiments with innovative technical solutions. Equipped with internal tie-rods to complete the tubular reinforcements, it has been built following a glued frame construction system to leave nothing visible other than the Colombo tubes. The bicycle is completed by a Campagnolo Record groupset and a Super Leggera saddle by Selle Italia from the same era in which the tubes were designed.

UNIVERSITÀ DEGLI STUDI DI MILANO – Interni Design Re-Generation

June 06 2022 -> June 12 2022

"Design Re-generation" is a project by Interni including more than 40 projects which will be exhibited in the evocative spaces of the Università degli Studi di Milano.

The exhibition includes interactive installations, labyrinths, gardens and author’s structures, designed by illustrious national and international designers and supported by companies and institutions.

Some projects on display for "Design Re-generation":

Tibet, the installation created by Andrea Branzi with Porro, located in the Loggiato Ovest.
The project consists on a large white bookcase, 14 metres long, defined by essential geometrical lines and enlivened by colour. It conceived to exhibit some everyday objects restored and painted in bright colours: from simple cans and tins to water or detergent bottles.

Sidereal Station. A project by AMDL CIRCLE and Michele De Lucchi with Whirlpool. Cortile d’Onore
Positioned in the Main Courtyard, this installation is a tower-like micro-structure standing 14 metres high. It has a truncated conical form inspired by a construction module in triangles of decreasing size, covered with Pure white Alucobond which generates reflections that change with the light. At night, it is illuminated by Artemide RGB spotlights, deployed at the base. The tower contains a small, cylindrical body: a multimedia room, obscured by a sound-absorbing curtain around it. A video is projected on the ceiling, and the gaze is instinctively drawn upwards to contemplate the images which pay tribute to the beauty of our planet.

The A-maze Garden, a project by Lissoni Associati for Amazon with Iliad e Sony. Cortile della Farmacia
A maze of curved walls in four different heights, covered in mirrored aluminium and with orange horizontal surfaces in paste-dyed MDF, celebrates, also with the support of explanatory videos, the values of the environmental commitment established by Amazon with the Climate Pledge, as interpreted by Lissoni Associati curated by Francesco Canesi Lissoni.

Labyrinth Garden. A project by Raffaello Galiotto with Nardi. Cortile del Settecento
The installation is an outdoor multi-path maze made up of an articulated circular path which develops on the 625 square metres of the grass of the Cortile del Settecento of the Ca’ Granda university building. The walls of the track are made using Sipario partitions in 100% regenerated and recyclable plastic, equipped with pots and plants. The regenerated plastic mix in the colour Terra, with a mottled and matt finish, is the result of the Nardi industrial project called Regeneration for the production of outdoor furniture in post-consumer plastic, with a view to environmental sustainability.

The exhibition includes interactive installations, labyrinths, gardens and author’s structures, designed by illustrious national and international designers and supported by companies and institutions.

Some projects on display for "Design Re-generation":

Alis, a project by Zaha Hadid Architects in collaboration with Tecno. Cortile d'Onore
Presented in its world premiere at the Biennale Architettura 2021, Alis is a place to interact and connect conceived by firm director Michele Pasca di Magliano. The construction of this meeting pod provided with the most advanced technologies has been made possible by the partnership with Tecno: an ideal space to work, physically or from remote, surrounded by sinuous petals that ensure privacy while also providing a view of the surrounding environment with its cubic volume in transparent glass.

Echinoidea - Biophilic Pavilion. A project by GG-loop and Rubner Haus. Cortile d’Onore
The installation, designed by Giacomo Garziano/GG-loop and built by Rubner Haus in the Main Courtyard, takes the form of a modular, timber louvre structure which is adaptable and easy to assemble. Measuring 6 x 6 x 6 metres, it offers an immersive experience in a space exploring the origins of architecture (the Vitruvian concept of the ‘primitive hut’), calling for a humanity immersed in nature. Lights by Artemide.

Love Song. A project by Ron Arad with Citco. Cortile d'Onore
The extruded marble sculpture designed by studio Ron Arad and Associates and manufactured by Citco is a visual palindrome that conveys the perception of an easy-to-model, versatile and light material. The piece (190 x 127 x h 77 cm) is carved from a block of white Carrara marble positioned on a metal base covered in marble and is mounted at eye level so that visitors can walk around it and measure themselves against the twisted extrusion of love and song.

Light Structures for Solid Ideas, a project by Franco Raggi with Mario Falci by Maria Christina Hamel and coordinated by Cesare Castelli for Milano Makers (MiMa). Cortile d’Onore
The exhibition celebrates the tenth anniversary of the cultural association’s commitment to disseminating and promoting self-production and highlights new designs, materials and functions in which sustainability is the guiding principle for a new quality of life. The five keywords that have always guided MiMa’s work – inclusion, circular economy, environmental sustainability, education and aesthetics – are expressed through as many exhibition sections balancing art with design. Among the talents featured in "Light Structures for Solid Ideas" are the Portuguese artist Flavia Freixa, the very young Fabiola Pignatelli and the architects Pietro Gaeta and Ezio Colombrino, together with Bruno Gregory, Denis Santachiara, Cinzia Ruggeri, Maria Christina Hamel and Franco Raggi himself.

This year, the residents of Zaventem Ateliers, together with some guests, will invest in one of the most remarkable places of the historical industrial heritage of Milan, the former Necchi factory in the Baranzate district. Baranzate it’s an opportunity to introduce creations and projects of Belgian designers and artists as well as those presented by their friend galleries and internationally renowned guests but also to show an overview of Zaventem Ateliers philosophy and the possibility of its expansion.

Created in 2019 by Belgian designer, artist and interior architect Lionel Jadot, Zaventem Ateliers is a former industrial wasteland of 6000 m2, located in the village of Zaventem, a stone’s throw from Brussels. This atypical hub brings together an eclectic community of emerging and established creators, designers, artists and scenographers, united by their passion for producing and processing materials. They are focused on high-quality and well-researched objects and strive to produce unique pieces or limited editions which reflect the latest innovations and designs with a purpose of collectible designs.

Belgium is Design, a project whose mission is the promotion of Belgian design at an international level, joins Ateliers Baranzate to give visibility to Belgian designers and companies during Milan design week. This year, Belgium is Design also presents the collective booth The New Belgians at the SaloneSatellite with 13 studios that explore the alliance between science, technology and art, as well as industrial processes and crafts, through assembly methods that give new life to natural materials, for urban and nomadic spaces.
